Battlefiled 3, what am I doing wrong?

Playing wirelessly?

I had something similar until I plugged an Ethernet cable in.

That did the trick for me.

When you lose frame-rate are you playing on servers that have a load of players? what I am getting as is, is your game having to process to much? that might be where your PC is straining.

You should have a look to see if you can download any BF3 gfx profiles for your card.

Also have a look at what temperatures your card and processor are hitting while your playing, its a demanding game.

Hello all,
I just spent 45 quid on BF3 premium edition, as I was a huge fan of it on the PS3, but just haven't quite had the money to spend on buying it for the PC. Well today I did, waited an age for it to download, then finally figured how to make it actually work and join a server. I have an AMD FX4170 processor running at 4.2 GHz, an EVGA GTX 660 Superclocked and 8GB of RAM. Now the first thing I did was do a bit of messing about in the settings. I found that even running on the lowest settings I get massive framerate drops for no apparent reason. I'm running along and it's running at 70fps, then nothing happens and I'm still running, no explosions or anything, and it'll go to around 10-20, then back up to 70. It seems to repeat this process about once every 5 seconds or so. Anyway, the main point is that I must be doing something wrong? My PS3 was smoother than my PC and my PC is way more powerful? And yes Vsync is off and so is post processing and anti-ailiasing etc etc. I mean, I know BF3 is demanding and I wasn't exactly expecting to play it on ultra but not even on low settings? C'mon...

Sounds like the issue is more CPU related than GPU.

Get a monitoring program such as AIDA, and monitor the usage of your all your main components. If your CPU is maxing out to 90-100% on any of the cores during your frame rate crashes, then you will know it is a CPU problem.

The above wont fix your problem, but you will at least know where to look.

P.S. Welcome to the world of PC gaming! I hope you are enjoying having these headaches as there will be plenty more to come, especially with the BF3/Origin combination. This is what PC gamers dont advertise to console gamers when they are rubbing their gfx eye candy or ultra smooth frame rates into everyone elses faces.

I'd say it was probably related to the downloads causing latency causing the pause.

I'd obviously, after the downloads complete, then try and run it with everything on stock if it isn't fixed.

£45? Ouch! There's a link in the daily deals thread for BF3 Premium for $15! Someone bought it and it isn't region locked. Suppose it's too late to get a refund?!

Edit: My mistake, doesn't include the original BF3 game.

Good evening all! Thank you for all the responses!
After waiting for the DLC's to download I found that I was proven wrong and it runs fine even on the auto setting (somewhere between medium and high) at around 60-80 FPS. I cannot play on 64 player servers without going to around 40 FPS even on low settings, but that was to be expected. I can now finally appreciate Frostbite 2's unrivaled beauty and there has been a couple of moments already where something has happened and I've just sat back and thought, wow
