There isn't particularly a story that you need to be aware of regarding Battleswarm; in fact, players pick and choose between one of two sides: Human soldiers or alien Bugs (think something like a multiplayer Starship Troopers). The twist with the game comes in based on the side that you choose. As a human player, you take control of one soldier packing significant weaponry, armor and explosives that you can use to blow apart bugs with ease in a first person shooter perspective. Of course, you are only one person, so you'll need to rely on the skill and teamwork of your fellow squadmates to survive battles and eliminate attacks from the insects. Up to six players can team together as a squad to destroy the hordes of bugs sent at you.
On the other hand, if you choose to play as the bugs, your experience is a bit different. Instead of blasting your enemies to pieces with firearms, you are an alien Bug commander in charge of dozens, if not hundreds, of insects. With real time strategy mechanics, you balance the resources that you have. This means building hives to spawn new units, creating new powers for your creatures to use against human squads and other objectives to adapt your forces to the human threat. Up to four separate Commanders can control the bug forces, wielding hundreds upon hundreds of creatures to destroy your enemies.
