I have a bay window in my bedroom. 3 Panel so not too big.

Recently its drafty and the sound dampening is terrible, it sounds like im outside when in the bedroom....

So i had someone come over and they quoted me £2201 for the SINGLE BAY WINDOW!!!!

I then spoke to his manager is simply said that there was no way i was going to spend that when i could go to B&Q and buy the window for £300 and get a chap i know to fit it for £200...

he said he could do it for trade price of £1289 Next week....

I ended up having to say i wold think about it.

Is there a reason why these people try and charge so bloody much? is it because they are cheeky? or expect us not to know what things cost?

The sales man also wanted me to price up the whole house... i said no.
 
Because they work on commission usually, so they will try to get as much as they can get. I think my brother was getting something like 7-10% of what ever he sold, but he wasn't paid unless he sold something, meaning he was spending like £30-£50 a day on petrol traveling across the region and often with nothing to show for it, more often then not because people were time wasters or because they wanted some stupid deal. His most recent one for example was someone wanting 12 windows for £3,000, yet the cost of the windows to the company would have been £6,000 and this is before all the other costs like fitting etc. He had to stop going to appointments in the end since he didn't have the money for petrol.

A lot of them are scum and will take people for as much as they can get, they take advantage of OAPs who more often then not don't know what they're doing so they leave the salesman to fill in the forms for them where they then rip them off for as much as they can get away with. (Obviously not everyone is like this, but a lot of people he worked with did this sort of thing).

So it really just comes down to they will charge as much as they can get because they will earn more on their commission and they usually get away with it because people don't know any better and don't bother to shop around.
 
The window industry is one massive scam.

I've done the job, and from day one they drill into you that anything goes as long as you can make a sell.

This includes

Adding your own mark up

telling blatant lies

targeting the old

if you were close to a deal you could nip out to call the boss to see if you can get them a discount..that's a lie. You go out chat ******** to the boss them go back in and say he said best he can do is 10 percent off

Get taught how to profile houses so not to waste time on people who couldn't before 48

The list goes on, but typing long replys on my phone is pita

Moral of the story..trust no one, esp not a salesman ;)
 
Be aware that unlike "Normal" windows, Bays are frequently structural. Especially on older properties (IE they may actually support whatever structure is above them) A degree of care is required when replacing bay windows otherwise you might end up with the entire house falling on your head!! It is not always a case of simply removing the old widows and putting in some new ones!

Having said that, Window companies seriously take the "Water of Life"! When I replaced 10 windows in my Mothers home 5 years ago (All hardwood double glazed units) I bought all of them from Wickes for 6K and hired a building labourer to help me for two days. Yer typical DG company would have charged Lord Knows how much (25K??) to do the same job!
 
What makes you think the windows from b&q or wickes will fit? Bay windows should be made to measure with bay poles jacks. A bay window not fitted correcly could cause a lot of problems and worst case the loss of the front of your house.

Are you after PVC or wood?

PVC windows vary quite a bit so make sure they are decent if you are going for PVC. Main thing to look out for would be that the frame is 70mm thick, as some are only 60mm. The double glazed unit should be 28mm thick, this will give optimal soundproofing.

£200 sounds fair for fitting it. I used to get £150 for a 3 seg bay window when I worked for a local PVC window company.
 
Oh god no, please don't buy a bay window from B&Q.

Find a local independent firm, get friends and family to recommend one, but don't buy a bay window from B&Q. Just, no.
 
Thanks for the advice, I asked around my family and they said i should take all the measurements and pop down to a place called Progress in Hinckley.

Supposedly they are the cheapest around here, they will quote you a price for the window and then you pick an fitter from there list or something.

will pop in tommorow :D
 
Generic window firm started off on our house at 9900 knocking it down to 5500 after the call to the boss even included the lighter under the glass trick in the end we paid 1400 from a local guy who uses profile 22 and was done in a day

That included a non structural bay
 
I'm going to be having my wooden sash windows converted from single glazed to double glazed by a specialist. For the bays he quoted about £1700 each and about 3 weeks per bay. That's not including any problems he may find along the way.

It'll be expensive, but worth it in my opinion, he comes recommended by a work colleague who says this guy is a stickler for detail.
