BBC Abandoning 3D Broadcasts

Pretty sure all the license fee goes to the BBC, C4 and the welsh version S4C or whatever it's called get public funds direct from the government.

I have never used a 3D TV or cinema and I have zero urge to do so. I still feel sick when I think of the old 3D mags with pictures of spiders and stuff and those silly glasses

I've had a 3D TV over a year now, watched maybe one or two films on it but got annoyed at the glasses and the whole gimmick of it so not used it since

Luckily 3D just happened to be a bonus when buying that TV. People who have bought a TV for 3D must be feeling a little miffed right now due to the total lack of backing

I like 3D and don't consider it a gimmick, if done well... I've only used 3D for watching films at home [not TV], and think it can look stunning, genuinely adding to the experience {Life of Pi for instance}. As long as the option is there for those who don't care for it I don't get why people would welcome its demise so strongly... "I don't like, so no one else should" is just annoying and petty

As for TV broadcasts, I can't see the point quite so much and can understand it being dropped, to save money for other things... I could be wrong, but I can't see that Wimbledon in 3D would add much to the experience..

Well i like 3D, why all the hate, if it bothers you that much don't use it.

The problem is that sometimes you can't avoid it, it's being slapped on everything just look at the cinema often without 2d counterparts.

The hate stems from it taking over, instead of it being a part of entertainment.

Less choice = worse off.

Or the only 2D showing being those with captions for the heard of hearing.

It's almost like they wanted to put people off watching the film in 2D.

And the tickets are more expensive *to pay for the new kit the cinemas had to buy to show 3d movies* and then you need to buy/rent the 3d glasses on top of that...

Glad to see the general acceptance of broadcasters that 3d is generally not a good thing to spend money on. Can't say I'll miss it. Other half is delighted as 3d makes her vom.

I've got several films on bluray in both 3d and 2d and I can't remember the last time I watched one of the 3d discs.

All terrestial channels have a public service remit and all see some of the licence fee in some capacity.

Definitely a good decision - A massive waste of money in my opinion - In both film and TV. The only decent 3D I've seen is in Avatar at the cinema, and even that was only good due to the added depth of effect. I'd still much rather watch a non-3D version without having to wear glasses.

I hope this is the beginning of the end of 3D productions - The technology isn't advanced enough to be used effectively, and is currently just being used to generate further revenue.

It's worth keeping around as it will eventually take off when augmented/virtual reality become mainstream, probably some future version of google glass and oculus rift will mean there's less need for tv's as you can have a huge virtual display anywhere you want, in fact i think they already have a virtual cinema where you can watch with others online. :D
