Why do they feel the need to be so damn PC and apologise? Just how is using the term "**** shop" racist? I mean, if a guy is from Kazakhstan he's a Kazakh, same for Turkmenistan, Hindustan, Tajikistan etc. etc. So if he's from Pakistan it's the correct term. All the suffix 'stan' means is 'place of' in Persian.

So how can what I can only assume was the word **** being uttered considered racist by a Corporation whose wages we pay?

In fact the correct term for someone from Pakistan is Pakistani. The word "****" has for years been considered an offensive term by many. I'm suprised that you didn't know that

It seems Iggy Pop has appologised for using that word, as it he unintentially caused offense to a group of people.

I think i it wont be long before using the word 'corner shop' will be classed racist

Azagoth, Go to a group of Pakistanis and call them "Pakis" and see what happens. Report back here with your findings.

But thats the point he should be able to. British - Brits, Australians - Aussies, Turkish - Turks etc etc etc.

So who is it really creating the problem?

The people who started using "****" as an offensive term.

I'm sure you're fine with using it, and that's your perogative; however I put up with 6 years of people calling me a "****" in a derogatory way at the 99.9% white catholic secondry school I went to (I'm not Pakistani, I'm half Indian, half scottish and I was catholic at the time I was at school.) and I regard it as a derogatory term, because that is how it was used towards me.

OK, typing this can't really portray sincerity, so I REALLY do apologise if I cause offense to you.

However, if you were called that at school then I would have thought you have every right to be offended because you're not from Pakistan. Calling someone from Wales an English person is not at all 'nasty' but that person would probably get a tad upset. That I can understand, AND, I can understand why you'd get upset too.

But by your own admission, you say you're half Indian, half Scottish. Would you be offended if, as I speak now, if I called you Jock? What about Indy? Would that be offensive?

Again, I seriously not been argumentative or awkward, I'm just finding it hard to understand.

Do those names have a history of being used with a derogatory meaning? Do you think the word "******" is not offensive to anyone? After all, its origins lay in a geographical location.

lmao, 3 viewer complaints, get a ****** grip.

At least I can understand this one though, unlike that big brother farce.

And Regarding the post above, people who find a word offensive should really get a grip... Words arent offensive, only the way they are used. Anyone who thinks otherwise is putting their biased feelings before common sense.

That's just it though. This was discussed months ago, and whilst 'personally' I don't see the problem with the word ****** because it's based on it's geographical location, I "CAN" understand that people would be offended because:

a) The may not be from Nigeria, perhaps Kenyan, Somalian, etc, etc.
b) The term was originally used in things like Slavery.

However I FAIL to understand how two black people can say it to each other and that's ok as it's a term of friendship or whatever.

I call one black friend "******" as he thinks it's hillarious that I sound so stupid when I say it. In his eyes it's similar to going round town, seeing someone and calling them a **** and been at work, doing something stupid and saying "you stupid ****"". It's the context in how it's said that makes it sound offensive or not.

So no, I don't think the word Jock, Taff, Tyke, Cockney, Paddy, Scouser, Woolyback, Yokel, bumpkin, brummie, jack, turk, etc are offensive at all.

The point he's making is that the word was used in a offensive manner and always will be, it may mean something else in the dictionary term but if tens of thousands of people find it a derogatory term i don't really think the rest of us should argue it.

Just comes down to manners really, you could argue your case till the sun doesn't shine but it would probably be more economical to just accept the fact its not something people should be saying anymore.

I don't think it's the word itself, it's more the way that the word "****" is used, and in more cases than none, it's said to someone with the intention of causing offense. Iggy probably didn't mean it in a racists manner, but surely he could have just said "cornershop" or something similar?

Would I be offended if you called me Jock?... it depends on how you call me it. If you said it in a (pun intended) jocular fashion, then no. If you were a group of 5 or 6 people intent on causing me harm/anguish because I'm from a different area or a different colour then yes, this is what happened at my school.

It may be mainly about context for most. However, for me, because "****" has been used as a derogatory/hurtful term in the past, I don't want to be called it.

I can see why younger people don't see it as a derogatory term... because nowadays IMO there is less racism (or maybe that's only towards me, either way it's good). But it still doesn't change the fact a lot (and I mean a LOT) of people would be offended if you called them a "****"... even if they were from Pakistan.... this is because (maybe up until recently) it has been used in a derogatory fasion.

The term '****' has many connotations and I believe that it's offensive meanings are less obvious to an America (G Bush used it a little while ago).

I don't mind what the BBC did, simply because it wasn't the drastic over-reaction that Ch4 have taken on less 'offensive' incidents.

I don't mind the apology, not that I think it was needed, but its better than the oft repeated frenzy.

I don't agree with the apology but ...

is 100% correct. If enough people used it as an offensive term towards a certain group of people we can make any word we want an insult. "Red", "Bike", "Nut", etc.

It's not really a hard thing to grasp, people.

As said by jpmonkey69, blame the people who started using it as an offensive term and moved it from an innocent word to something else.

agreed, in most english speaking countries it's just an abbreviation of pakistani
to quote a kiwi stand-up i've seen a few times:
it's only offensive here because we keep putting ****ing in front of it
