I make daily use of the BBC website as I'm sure most people here also do. In the last four months I've lost count of the number of 404 errors and dead links to articles. Has anyone else noticed the quality of the website deteriorating or is it just me?

I'm getting fed up with spelling mistakes, also in newspapers too.

The Scotsman is terrible, I don't think people proof read what they produce anymore.

Can't remember which paper it was but a whole mini paragraph was repeated twice in one half page story.

Like, come on?!

i've had it a few times, but as biohazard has said, it's the spelling mistakes that really annoy me. what are they paying their editors for?

I've seen broken links appear for years. Usually they happen soon after a new story is posted. The link to the story shows up but doesn't work. No idea why it happens, but probably human error.

Editorial quality in general has gone downhill (not just spelling mistakes, but grammar, repeated words, and things that basic proof-reading would usually spot). Yes, it does irk me on occasion. Trouble is that proof-reading takes resources and the BBC cut those back when merging the various news organisations a year or two back.

I even once reported a news story about a scam that was detectable due to a spelling mistake. Problem was, the BBC made the very same mistake. :D

I read it daily, I use all different parts of the website.

Can't say I've noticed it going downhill, just the odd mistake from a site the size of the BBC isn't too bad :)

If it bothers you that much could you not just stop using it and use an alternative site instead? Have you tried contacting them regarding the errors/broken links etc? what was the response given if so?

i don't mind broken links or spelling/grammatical errors that much. what really irks me is when a news story/article is just a video, with no actual article to read, forcing me to watch at the pace that the presenter goes through the information, and forcing me to put my headphones on, not to mention the fact that i means that i can't see the videos on my phone etc...

*irked*

The BBC's website budget has been cutback quite severely in the last 12mths....25% or so.

Obvioulsy fewer staff doing the same job as before....a decline in standards is inevitable.

You should thank scumbag Murdoch and the rest, complaining/lobbying to government about competition issues for said cutbacks...

I see this a fair bit as well in various papers. I used to work for a newspaper publisher and it was basically cost cutting in our company which then resulted in this. They decided they no longer needed any of the previous people who used to proof-read the papers/articles/adverts/lineage before it went to press. They did other stuff, but this was one of their tasks.

I'm more concerned with BBC news becoming another Daily Mail, one day I saw "product X can cause cancer" in the "also in the news" section, then the very next day I saw "product Y can prevent cancer" in the very same section...

BBC News isn't loading correctly for me now. I'm getting this error message:

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

I sometimes see spelling errors in BBC News articles, and I see many 404 errors, as well as videos that don't load because the content cannot be found.
