bbc drops itself in the...ya know. (discrimination)

The Rooney rule comes from the NFL and resulted in a dramatic increase in black coaches being hired.

Black coaches were suitable for the job but they weren’t getting a foot in the door for whatever reason.
I think the Rooney rule is fine as it only requires that black coaches had the opportunity to apply, if places adapt a similar thing I would be fine with it. My issue is when people of colour/religion/gender/sexuality or whatever it may be are hired over somebody else just for one of those reasons and not based on their ability to do the job.

Basically - Making sure everybody has an equal opportunity to actually apply for a role = Good

Hiring people for any reason other than being best suited/most qualified (such as to increase the percentage or black or women workers for example) = Bad

Maybe I haven’t read the original post properly but my understanding is that the BBC is giving BAME candidates a boost in applying for jobs (through additional trainining) rather than making jobs open to BAME candidates only.

It’s a clumsy and imperfect way to boost diversity at the BBC but I don’t understand the level of outrage.

No, you have read it correctly. Its offering additional training to BAME candidates to effectively give them experience and a 'step up' when they do eventually apply for a job.

Am I outraged about it? No, but I am genuinely shocked that its considered to be 'ok'.

For me, this is the problem in a nutshell, and although it isnt a job, it is offering an 'opportunity' on a non equal basis to the BAME community.

There are two types of people in this thread, those that understand the definition of racism, and idiots/liars.

You can try and dress it up any way you like, but if you are discounting a group based on any arbitrary characteristic, its discrimination. Discrimination based on skin color is racism.

If you support it, that's fine, but call a spade a spade and just put your hand up and say "I'm a racist and I'm proud of it".

I don't really agree with positive discrimination but feel that Rooney rule is a good compromise. However in this case the opening is affiliated with a group promoting BAME in the media so I think it's slightly different to a job listing that just says no white people.

It's a problem when there aren't enough Black Football managers, but not a problem when 11/23 of the senior England squad are Black.

I have a problem with statements like this:

"It's a problem when there aren't enough [insert race] [insert job]."

It's not a problem at all if the race or gender composition of something is one way or another.

Just like the gender pay gap isn't a problem.

They're just measurements of stuff, not problems.

Do you believe that white English players are being discriminated against?

No I think it's based on performance in the same way there doesn't happen to be very many top black football managers, it's just one is a problem and one isn't

The results of the Rooney rule being implemented in the NFL proved that black coaches were being discriminated against early in the hiring process.

We’ll see whether the same holds true for FA coaches.

Racism isn't the same in Britain as America, we discriminate much more on social class, race is their thing.

Where is the equivalent scheme for white people to apply for, and is it being advertised in the same way?

If there isn't one then this is racism/discrimination. There are plenty of underprivileged white people out there who could also benefit from something like this.

If it is something you feel passionately about then you could set up your own charity or Non-profit to provide such training courses if they don't exist.
