BBC HD World Cup Program

sorry to hijack but how do u recieve a HD image on terrestrial TV atm? Are you going thru a sky HD box or can u buy freeview HD?

Its a test box given to people who signed up for the test program. You can also recieve it through a tv card if you live near enough to the transmitter.

I'm nowhere near Crystal Palace and I don't have SkyHD so why did the image look so good? I could see every blade of grass on that pitch (those that weren't in shadow).

Watching on a Sony Bravia 40" LCD with built-in freeview card (on the freeview signal not the terrestrial analogue).

Maybe it was just the beer-goggles!

HAd a few friends round for the game yesterday. I have Telewest TVDrive connected to my SAGEM AXIUM HDD50H. I was flicking between BBC1 and BBC1HD to demonstrate the difference which was quite a lot. The clarity is amazing. However I also thought the footage from ITV was even better. I friend is going to buy a TV today he was so impressed.

Shame the Grand Prix isn't broadcast in HD at the moment.

Is this progressive or ye olde interlaced 25fps?

All the game footage is shot by HBS in 1080i, unfortunately. I thought everyone knew that 720p was the way to go for sport? 50 (or 60) full frames a second is what you want; but seeing as we've been watching 25fps for years, i guess we're used to it and appreciate the difference in resolution.

Interesting comparison, i know a chap with Sky HD and TV Drive.

His findings are as follows :

BBC HD on Sky was best, then ITV HD on TW then BBC HD on TW.

Strange that the BBC transmission was better on Sky than on TW, he also mentioned that he cried with laughter when he saw ITV on Sky comapred to even SD ITV on TW let alone thr HD signal.

Using the trial BBC/ ITV / Ch4 HD terrestrial equipment, I found ITV HD best of all followed by BBC HD , even though there wasnt much in it - the shadows really affected the BBC show I blieve, and that of course isnt their fault.

I can see what you mean. The BBC footage (whilst SD for me) looks stunning. Maybe they're up the bit rate or something but it does look stunning compared to any normal show on the BBC. If it looks this good in SD (I have watched high bit rate strams before and it hasn't looked this good) then I can't begin to imagine the clarity of the HD feed.

Just watching ITV Angola vs Portugal. Not a patch on the England BBC broadcast, maybe it's just framerate maybe it's more - but I could swear to the match yesterday looking better than the match today.

I'd be interested to know if anyone sustained any damage to their HD plasma or lcd tv today when it was forced to display a HD image of Iain Dowie during the Togo v S Korea half time summary.
