BBC iPlayer on Wii

Does the web based iplayer not work via the PS3's browser ? - I'll try it when I get home tonight :D

I know iPlayer uses adobe flash 9, and I recently realised that is on the ps3 web browser as youtube works. In theory I can't see why it would not work (streaming version), prior to today's Wii release. I believe it only works on Wii as BBC have encoded the videos to Flash player 7 format (I don't think the Wii browser supports Flash 9).

Would never use it but would be interested to know if you get it working.

p.s. Wii owners, if it runs from the Internet Channel only does that mean you have to have paid for the web browser on it to make it work?

Only if you didn't get the browser when it first came out. I think you had to pay for the browser after July 07. I have the full browser and didn't pay for it as I had it from the first release.

No, I've just tried the iPlayer site on the PS3s browser. All the Flash player controls are greyed out - the page doesn't even display correctly with misaligned graphics.

Great idea.

I've used the iPlayer to download then streaming to the 360 feature a few times and you'd not know any better but to have the ability to stream anything directly is a real step forward.

And all 3 consoles have a use now...

Wii to watch TV
PS3 to watch Blu-Ray movies
360 to play games

heh, couldn't resist ;)

Playing with it some more on the Wii now I notice the full screen button of the player (thats on the PC browser version) disappears and if you zoom the Wii browser in more and more the framerate starts to drop off quite a lot. It needs some work but its a good start I would say.

heres the iplayer news page link and what it says for those of you at work etc: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/latest/

BBC iPlayer now on Nintendo Wii

Last month we made BBC iPlayer available on Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch devices, the first of many mobile platforms that we hope to support.

The theme for this month's iPlayer release is "iPlayer in the living room"- i.e. watching BBC on-demand programmes on your big-screen television set.

Today, most people watch iPlayer programmes on their computer. That's great - you can watch your favourite BBC programmes curled up in bed with your notebook PC, or on your study desk while you check your email, or (if you downloaded our programmes) on the plane or away abroad on holiday.

But have you tried hooking up your computer to your TV set?

iPlayer programmes, particularly downloaded programmes, look great on a TV. The video quality is usually even better when iPlayer programmes are played back on a TV than on your computer screen. Most newish computers, particularly notebook computers, have an S-video output, which, with a suitable S-video to SCART cable, can connect to most modern TV sets. If you have an LCD or plasma TV, chances are that it will have a VGA input which will give even better picture quality when connected to the VGA output of your notebook PC.

If you have a Nintendo Wii, it's already connected to your TV, and now you can play BBC iPlayer programmes directly on your Wii.

On your Wii, you'll first need to install the Internet Channel, which costs 500 Wii points, or approx. £3.50 (unfortunately there's no alternative to having to buy the Wii Internet Channel for iPlayer web site access at this time - but later we hope to be able to get iPlayer on Wii without this purchase being needed). After you've installed the Internet Channel, browse to www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer, find your favourite programme, and hit Play. The programme should play immediately.

For a smooth playback experience on Wii you'll need an internet connection that can give you 1Mbps or better. If you're experiencing buffering issues, try turning off any P2P or other downloads that are running on other computers around your home.

iPlayer on Wii is still in beta, and over the coming weeks we'll tweak the video encoding rates and playback window size to get the best possible video quality

Ah crap !!

I have BTVision anyway and that has BBC reply stuff via Video On Demand and its free so it's not a total loss.

Wii world domination to follow. This probably will mean other channels will follow (4OD, etc) and then people will use the Wii as a media hub.

I think this will be much more impressive when, and if, they get a dedicated BBC iPlayer channel up and running. Quality was ok from what I tried but it really needs the full screen option to make it anymore than a 'neat trick'.

This would be good if it actually worked properly tried a couple of programs now and they stutter every 10-15 seconds.

If the beeb get a proper iplayer channel setup with full screen capability this would be top drawer.
