BBC iPlayer to hit Macs in 2008

Finally! This will be good news for me - especially when I keep missing some proggies like that 'life in cold blood' documentary.

Quality is certainly good enough!

Yup, I might try downloading NMTB tonight if I can be bothered installing their software to see how much extra quality there is.

The streamed version looks fine from about a meter away @ 1900x1200. :)

Likewise on 1680x1050. The only people who might find it of use is those on slower connections where streaming is very stop start. I have this problem when in my uni halls, but anywhere else it silky smooth!

non-streaming iplayer doesn't work in lots of halls (I know it doesn't work in 3 different unis at least) due to ports being blocked. :(

Dont know about you guys but the quality sucks.

for instance, i wated a old epsode of eastenders and the quality is lower than Standard def, i mean really lower than standard def heh

on a PC to HDTV the quality is well lets put it this way, P*** poor. ..

I actually thought the iPlayer didn't work with Macs. Full stop.

*blush*

I only discovered the streaming the other day.. let's say I've been milking the feature ever since. Not too bothered with the downloading anyway.

Depends where you are I guess. The problem in Sheffield is that every thing is open, ports wise, the internet is just slow. They limit you to 60kb/s downstream. It's fine for playing games (I've been getting pings of 4-5 on 32player TF2 servers) or surfing the web, or even small downloads. For any streaming though or large downloads its just not good enough.

Having said that; I'd much rather it be unrestricted and slow rather than restricted and not slow!

People like me, limited by 512kbps will find downloading and watching it whenever I want (within the limited timing if there is one?) - streaming is too stop start for me...

Downloading the episode now... Had a few hurdles along the way;

Had to update some DRM crap, the downloader wasn't connecting, disabled firewall ahoy.

It's using more ram than iTunes and Firefox too, and there is 2 processes running, KHost and Kservice.exe, same as the horrid 4OD service, iirc.

Download is going at about 120-170Kb/s. :/

Edit: Slightly better quality I suppose.

By the END of 2008! Good news that it's coming, but they're being very slow about it.
I wouldn't work my arse off to bring it to a couple of percent of BBC viewers either to be honest.

I think most of the time taken will be settling on a DRM format - there's nothing on the Mac except FairPlay, which Apple won't let anyone else use.

I prefer to stream to be honest. Less hassle imo. I wish 4OD would be compatible with Macs - hopefully this move by the BBC will make them do the same.

Maybe old news, but i just noticed that included in the announcement about the iplayer on the Wii that it now works for the Ipod Touch/Iphone. Seems to work very well, pic quality is excellent.
