Last night my mum was trying to offer suggestions for how to progress my career  mothers eh? :p

Anyway I realise she was just trying to help, so here's what she said. Basically she met someone who she hadn't seen in a while, and her son was doing something similar to me i.e. first job out of uni to applications development.

He's a member of the British Computer Society, and apparently they've given him some sort of grant to go on training courses such as management type stuff (not sure about programming courses?). Oh and it gives you a bunch of extra letters after your name

Anyway is anyone a member and is it worth it?

I haven't been a member long but the BCS itself seems good. It can't do any harm to put it down on the cv :)

You may need to check if you can join as a member or associate. The reason I say this is that to become a member you need a degree and two years experience in the industry, otherwise you get associate level. There are other factors so you may as well apply and see what they say

I'll have a look about on this grant stuff, that would be handy.

I've been a BCS member for two years. We were 'encouraged' by work to join

Has been a complete waste of time for me - £85/year for a membership card, woo! Not that I have to pay for it, but still.

I'm a 'member' (heh heh) despite not being a graduate - if you have enough experience then that outweighs any qualification requirements.

Personally I think it's a pretty worthless thing to have.

You can use it as a way to get charted engineering status. Apart from that I don't think its worth it. I am a member of the IEEE though (to get access to their huge library etc).

Ah Christ man, put a warning on your posts when they're funny and I'm eating a Breakaway at my desk, I damn near choked on the damn thing.

I'm a member, looks good on the CV and some companies (Not very many but an increasing number) want/insist there employees are a member of a professional body. The regular magazine is an alright read and I believe they will let you take aditional exams etc to give you proof of skills etc.

I haven't really noticed a huge benefit from being a member but hopefully it will come into it's own eventually.

I was a member for 2 years and saw no tangible benefits. About the only thing you get for your money is a flashy logo to bung on your CV :/

u can still get breakaways, clearly?!
standard supermarket fayre? i have not had one in years, do they taste as good as i fear most things dont

ITIL is all the rage these days. Try and get a foundation certificate in it, and that will help further your career in IT.

Sorry to quote again, but i want you to read this:

Have you got the foundation certificate?

Do ECDL Advanced you get membership free for 6 months lol. As I teach ECDL Advanced I ended up being a member, complete waste of time.
