The sound components are separated off on the posher boards, which can help to reduce interference. A discrete card is always the better option if you want high quality audio (unless you're just using optical output with an external decoder, of course).

Been really dissapointed by the onboard sound on my maximus VI formula. It sounds dull compared to my xonar DX. Which i cant use at present due to the cooler blocking the only available slot. Hopefully a change of cooler, (ocuk fathom) will enable me to go back to better sound.

Same here. I first had a Maximus Gene VI and the sound was ok, but not comparable to my Sound Blaster Z. The new board has a PCI-E 1x slot between the x16 slot and the socket, and I can nicely fit it in there without giving up Crossfire/SLI etc.

Yeah the K2 is a big one.

Can you not slot the sound card into the 2nd 1x slot which looks to leave a dual slot gap for a GTX670 above it?

As im running sli, putting the audio cards between the gpu's isnt a very good option as theyre non ref cards. This is the only slot available at present.

Whereas on my previous Z77 rig i could use the x1 slot above the first card.

Does it really not slot in there? the sound card isnt as wide and obviously not as long so not blocking all three fans totally.

It will fit stulid, but even by partially blocking the top card it will likely affect temps. It currently hits 72c in games, lower card at 55c. The pitfall of non ref cards i guess, but theyre not near as bad as wf 460's i had a while back as they were spaced a few mm's apart.

Okay, exchanged for the Gigabyte G1.Sniper M5!

I really could not resist a better audio from the get-go. I hope I have made the right decision because that green has kinda grown on me in the past few days

PS would a Corsair H100i fit okay on this 'board and in a Corsair Obsidian 350D Windowed Micro ATX Case?

I have the Maximus Hero, it's a utterly amazing board for the price, great looks, performance/Overclocking etc and the Supreme FX audio is fantastic.

That was my initial choice, but I'm most often very indecisive he he but I am happy with the choice I have made and the missus will be partially happy due to its size.
