Hi

I need to change service provider because there are 4 ppl who use the Internet connection constantly and with 2 who play gaming online and I cant surf even normal web pages because it has become so slow.

I need a reliable internt provider with unlimited usage and I don't mind paying up to £50per month so if someone has anything to suggest would be great.

is virgin as good as Be in terms of reliability(although much slower)? I would prefer no speed caping during peak times or any other funny tricks these internet companies pull.

any other company you can recommend?

thanks all

Virgin 50Mb is hit and miss. If you have a good connection, it's rock solid and you'll love it, otherwise it can be a disappointment.

Mine was spot on 24/7 and I could not fault it, yet other had loads of problems.
Probably best to find people in your immediate area and get their take on it as the overutilisation problems are localised problems.

Maybe you should try a different router first. I can't really help but I'm sure there will be someone who will be able to offer advice.

I have the 50mb virgin media line and it is noice.
Id enable the QoS for your computer only. Might help. Or if there's a way to prioritise YOUR traffic then do that if you can.

Be don't have any throttling and are very reliable. The pings are very low too. However it all depends how good your phone line is. On their forums they are planning something to offer fibre (supposedly this year) as well.

Been with them over a year now and the line has always been rock solid.

online games don't generate enough traffic to saturate a connection, although if its bad for browsing then it would be terrible for gaming. I would see if the bittorrent/peer2peer culprit is willing to cap their usage so some of the connection is left unused.

If theres any problems in your area avoid virgin, if theres none then go with them... thats all i can say. just searching your first digits of your post code on good will work (dont use virgins fault finder as its terrible.)

For example search mine BN2 Virgin Broadband and you would want to steer clear :P

Another vote for Virgin here.

I've been on 50mb since it came out and its always been rock solid for me. I've had mabye a day of downtime with it since I got it installed.

Obviously having said that, I will get home from work today to find I have no internet....

With regards to latency and saturation, it's worth noting that I've had a far far better experience since upgrading to the VM 30Mb service.

The old network was prone to problems with latency when the connection got saturated. If someone was downloading then latency and general responsiveness for others deteriorated markedly, if the upstream was saturated it became even worse.

The new DOCSIS 3.0 network, as used by the 30, 50 & 100Mb services seems to suffer far less from these problems. If saturating the upstream then latency does still suffer a bit but I can happily leave downloads going at full tilt with little noticable effect on other people.

Overall I'm very impressed with VM and have been with them for 10 years now. It does seem to be very hit and miss depending on where you are, with some people having no problems whilst others have loads but I'm very happy with their service overall.
