Just moved into a new property & decided to call BE to see if they could give me a speed estimate. 5mb is what they quoted me. OMG I was hoping for at least twice that :eek:

What are their estimates normally like? Do they tend to underestimate their BB performance for potential customers?

hmm what about BT cancellation policies? I only had the line activated a few days ago when I moved in and remember them saying something about a 14 day period in which to change my mind -unless that was about the call package itself that I signed up for.
If I can cancel I will go with NTL cable or whatever instead.

They underestimate yes. I was predicted between 5 and 6 meg, but i actually get just under 14.

That might be your problem, also line quality, who old is your house?

They predicted exactly the correct speed for me, when i phoned they said 8meg, and i get exactly 8meg.

Problem is the cheaper 8mb service is 12 months contract.

when i was with bulldog 8mb, i was told i CANT get more than 8mb when they rolled out 16meg service. i'm now connected @ 19mb with BeThere

How far from exchange are you?
Can't be that far away with that speed.

You are free to upgrade to the £24 service any time though, which is a 3 month "rolling" contract.
