Hi all,

Im currently on ADSL max and sync around 4meg. My exchange is due to be upgraded by BE at the end of the month. Would I be able to get a faster speed with them, or is 4meg likely to be the best I can get?

Ta

Thanks

Based on the attenuation you entered, we estimate that your line can support around 3.0 - 6.0 Mbps on ADSL2+.

Not really worth me switching then is it?

How far are you from the exchange?

It might also be wirth giving Be a ring as they'll more than likely give you a more accurate figure.

Well Samknows reckons

You are approximately 2.30km from the exchange (straight line distance).

Ive got an attenuation of 51 so not great at all. I get downloads of about 450kbps with Aquiss though. £32 a month tho :(

It might be worth the swap just to get cheaper broadband, and the prospect of a bit of added speed then. :)

really? why
Possibly because his line is long although, according to the BE website, the limit for connecting someone is 5.5 km

Will I really get 24 megs?

The actual bandwidth that you will receive is based on the following factors: the length of the wire that connects your premises with the BT exchange, the quality of the copper, and environmental issues which include electrical interference and even sometimes bad weather and the distance you lived from the exchange. If your line is two kilometres long then you can expect to receive up to 15 megs (dependent on the above circumstances). Your bandwidth will decrease further as line length increases, and we do not offer our service if you are further than 5.5 kilometres from the exchange. While bandwidths are not guaranteed, we do offer the highest bandwidth available using ADSL2+ to your premises. Be pro members will receive a download speed of up to 22 megs, but an upload speed of up to 2.5 megs.

i've struggled with line quality issues with Be* ad to be honest they've done nothing to help, I resorted to lying to BT (I said there was noise on voice calls) and they sent an engineer who put a new cable from the distribution box outside to the master socket. Bought a couple of meg extra but it's still only 7mb or so and I'm about 800m from the exchange...not too impressive. Be* just aren't interested, nothing to suggest at all.

If it works and you get a speed your happy with then it might suit you if not you'll have a hard time improving things...

I would say it was worth moving to Be* if they decide to take you on.

My attenuation with Entanet was 42db & I synched at approx 6500. I was told by Be* I would only get 6mb(they tend to err on the minimum)My attenuation is now 45db & I sync at between 9.1-9.7mb. Even if you didn't get much of a speed increase, it would be worth it, imho, because

1) Full speed 24/7 (yes there is a FUP, but as far as I'm aware, it hasn't been implimented on anyone yet)
2) Higher upload connection
3) Cheaper than what your paying for now.

It's totaly worth it for the higher upload speed, I didn't notice what difference a 1.3Mb upload speed makes util I came home and used 4Mb BT broadband with 400k upload. When I use Bitorrent, downloads go so much faster with the higher upload.

I live in a student house about 400m away from the BT exchange and can get 20Mb on Be* Unlimited. I'm currently at home from Uni and having the 4Mb BT line seems really slow, I'm used to being able to download 200Mb files in a couple of minutes. I haven't had any reliability issued with Be yet, they did mail out a firmware update then told everyone not to install it about 3 days later, but apart from that they have been fine.
