just signed up to the Be*, as ive just moved home and have left my old broadband modem with my parents im wondering if the supplied Be* box is any good?

i planned on buying a netgear one (cant remember the model) before realising that the Be service was supplied with one, any opinions or recommendations as to whats the best way to go?

cheers :)

sounds good, i probably wont (or at best rarely) use the wireless side of things and keep myself wired so does it have any built in security?

The BeBox is inherrantly insecure, go and read on their forums FAQ section about how to go about deleting the back door accounts etc.

I'd still give the box a try and see how you get along with it, although I just used my DG834N straight away and found in comparison it would sync better than the BeBox.

cheers wij thats the sort of thing i needed to know, the missus will kill me when i tell her i want to spend more money but ill just say its a requirement for broadband to work, she'll never know the difference:p

so is the DG834N the box that comes highly recommended here? any others that people find to be secure and reliable?

Im very happy with my DG834N, miss some of the more advanced features that my previous DrayTek router had, although other than that its very good. Plugged it in last week when my service went live and apart from changing the SNR on it over telnet to get a bit more speed from the line I've not touched anything.

There are plenty of guides on the unoffical forums on how to set it up to work with Be, although off the top of my head the settings are:

LLC-Based encapsulation
VPI 0
VCI 101

No username / password and then just plug it in.

Be have a list on their forums of routers that are compatible with their service, and most people seem to be using either the DG834GT or the PN/N versions, although anything that uses a Broadcom chipset should be supported.

how long did your service take to be activated? im dreading a wait of 2-4weeks :(

cheers for the info

EDIT: well that was a nice surprise, just had an email to say order accepted and it will be activated on the 10th, thats the quickest any broadband company has ever got things sorted so to speak, love the email updates they give you too, i think im going to enjoy being on Be

submited my order at 9:36am, by 12:03 i recieve the email saying when its going to be activated

Probably not an issue for you, but be aware that the DG834N is not compatible with the Annex-M feature used on the BE Pro services, but as long as you don't need to go for the higher upload speed available on the Pro product you'll be fine.

To be honest, the standard BE Box is also fine once you follow the easy instructions to close the security loop holes.

I was under the impression that Annex-M support was added in the latest version of the firmware, or it will be in the next version.

So were a lot of other people, but sadly there were still no actual reports of this working last time I looked :)
