Beaches/place to visit in the south

Cheddar Gorge, Forest of Dean, Wookey Hole Caves. Maybe or maybe not obvious, just some of the places I remember going as a kid.

I've got my hotel (The Yacht Inn) and sea kayaking booked, any tips on any good seafood restaurants and pubs? We're not too fussed about checking out the occupation museum (Visited the one in Jersey before and we're only in Guernsey for a short time), can you recommend any of the restored bunkers in particular? Cheers :)!

Just seen your post. Not sure what the hotel is like, the pub underneath used to be a little rough around the edges, not sure what it's like now but you're certainly central and literally 30 seconds from the bus terminus.

I suggest you get an Ormer Card (bus pass – same idea as Oyster lol) which will make your bus fares £1 or less per journey.

Seafood restaurant:
– Absolute End. It’s a 15 minute walk from your hotel, left out of your hotel and stay the land side of the sea front going past tourist information office, the large roundabout and the road will bend to left which is another 5 minutes and the restaurant is on your left, again on the land side of the sea front.

Other restaurants I’d recommend:
- Red Steakhouse (on the left about 2 minutes from the Tourist Information Centre) – simply sublime!
- Da Nello’s – I would say this is the best restaurant in Guernsey (after Tourist Info take first left and then first right and it’s on your left)
- Pier 17 – left out of the Yacht Inn, restaurant located at the end of the first pier you come to on your right
- Breakfast I would recommend ‘The Loft Cafe’ which is in the top floor of the All In Black shop a few doors down from the Vodafone shop in the High Street (cobbled area)

Pubs/bars:
- Laskas (cocktail bar) which is a couple of doors down from the Yacht (right) is very nice if you’re into that sort of thing.
- The Terrace is a nice spot. Left out of the Yacht until you get to the first zebra crossing – don’t cross but follow the high wall on your left up and it’s just around the corner on your left.
- 'The (male chicken which I can't type for being censored) and Bull' has a good reputation and often has live music, especially on Tuesday/Wednesday nights.

Fortifications, your best bet is www.festungguernsey.supanet.com which will give you plenty of information.

There is a museum about 10 minutes from your hotel. Right out of Yacht, at the start of the large hill you come to there is a small coastal road to your left, follow that and this will lead you to museum and also eventually the Aquarium which isn’t bad.

The German Underground Hospital isn’t bad (freaks me out I must be honest) but well worth a look if you’re interested in that sort of thing. www.visitguernsey.com/-German-military-underground-hospital

Apart from travel I'd say Guernsey is a fair bit cheaper for meals/drinks than Jersey

Cheers thanks for the advice :). Tried to make reservations at Pier 17 and a couple of other places last night but everywhere was booked up for Saturday night! Ended up making reservations at the Old Quarter restaurant which has some good reviews.

At the moment we're going Sea Kayaking on Saturday and the on Sunday going to get the bus over to the Pleinmont Observation tower. Might checkout the underground hospital but we visited the one in Jersey in November, I imagine they can't be too dissimilar?

There really tonnes of great places in the UK, putting together a trip to the Peak District at the minute and really want to get over to Belfast this year.

Depends when you want to eat.

Old Quarter is OK - what sort of food do you like?

White D'Or which is a couple of doors down (tapas) is supposed to be very good.

If you have time then going on the boat to Herm (Island) is well worth it if you like nice beaches and short(ish) walks

Also if you like your coffee then skip Costa and head for 'Woodies' which does far nicer coffee :) Think I'd be dead without their double shots!

We were hoping to get one good sea food meal in, saw chilli scallops on the menu at Old Quarter so went for it.

I do fancy going to Herm but haven't been able to find a Ferry schedule. Is it doable to hop over for a couple of hours on a Sunday?

Goring if you fancy a bit of dogging in the evening.

Used to work there. Grim.

Bingo

It takes 30 minutes each way and probably 15-20 minute to walk to either of the two main beaches. Shell Beach is lovely and flat, quickest to get to and stunning beach (lives up to it's name), Belvoir Beach is 5 extra minutes walk and has a little kiosk and lovely swimming beach although there is a reasonably strong current depending on tide so 50mtrs from shore you should be fine). When you get off the boat just walk along the coastal path in a clockwise direction and you'll come to Shell beach first, then Belvoir.

Did you try the Absolute End Restaurant? Seriously is the place to have seafood and most of it is local.

One heck of a bump but I'm on Herm right now. I've been here since Wednesday. It's my third visit and I love it here, even if walking round the island has destroyed my boots in a day (the seams have split).
