Just setting up my HP DM1 4027ea and have to say the sound is very poor, with no bass whatsoever; and I am allowing for the size if the unit.My wife has a tiny JBL dock for her ipod and it cranks out sound like you wouldn't believe, the HP sounds like a stiffled mouse fart by comparison.

I was quite excited when reading a few of the coments in the laptop tread about sound quality on this but I can't say I've had the same experience :(
Threads on other sites say the same, with no one coming the the rescue on how to make things sound better. Is it all a big hype? I'm sure the unit in the store sounded better. Was there a 12" woofer hiding under the shelf? Am I a mug? Any ideas?

For the title question. IMO: Yes, they are a massively overpriced gimmick which has a nasty shiny coating, which makes them look like a £20 headset from some back street 'fleabayer' from China, and hasn't even got the basic sound quality of my mates £20 Sennheiser headphones. /rantover. :)

For me, its Asus laptops with the ICE power :D

i have a phone with Beats audio and it came with a pair of beats headphones too. Some guys online managed to see what the "Beats Equalizer" was and it was pathetically simple that they released the data for anyone to edit their equalizer for "Beats Audio" :p

to be honest, i feel a bit annoyed about the Beats stuff because it is priced so high, looks so good and everyone raves about them that i thought they'd be good :(

Sensation XE? I've got one and read that article a while ago. In all honesty, I wasn't too surprised that its a simple S curve equalizer, but it does sound great with my IE8s. Much better than listening to music on ipod or ipad.

Well, I've spent the best part of two hours messing with everything that could be messed with and can confirm beats audio is pants; certanly where the HP DM14027ea is concerned.
Just glad I didn't buy it purely for the sound quality.
Still think that they must have hidden a woofer in the shop tho'. The demo unit sounded a damn sight better in Currys.

What are they both hooked up to? Perhaps you're not giving them as much power as Curry's were?

Tried it as well on a HTC Sensation on display. Tried the supplied beats headphones, then tried my own, and not really too happy about it. Asus is the way to go for sound in laptops ;).

DcD:
I'm just using the pc itself. With what Bose are doing with waveguide etc, and the fact that the advert bangs on about the quality of beats audio, I assumed that it would sound at least as good as my 1983 Amstrad midi system with both woofers punched in.
I'm now looking at some satalite speakers to use with it but that wasn't the initial intention.
