BeBox - As a Modem (bridging)

We're getting Be activated tomorrow

and the BeBox arrived today, and it's the SpeedTouch 585 v6.
As this isn't as good as my existing router, I'd like to use it as a modem only (think this is called bridging?) and plug it into the WAN socket on my Linksys WRT600N.

So before the migration tomorrow and everyone screams at me whilst I try and work out how to this, anyone know how?
Aekeron mentioned it's possible here, but there's no nice shiny 'Modem Only' button on the BeBox

so it's obviously a bit more complicated :eek:

You tried a search in the Be forums?

"Just use the be* multi-IP template then set your other router to either Static-IP or DHCP (depending on if you have a static IP or not)"

What Tui said, go on the dontbethere forums or Be* forums, there are the template files on there for Static IP & Bridging.

I left the ip settings as default, turned dhcp off and setup my router on the same subnet as the bebox.

I didn't change the template at all.

Which subnet? If you have set it up with a private address on the SpeedTouch LAN side then this isn't bridging, you just have two router stages. The idea is that IP address given to the SpeedTouch is passed to your router.

I haven't got Be yet but from what I have read, the SpeedTouch comes with a Be loaded template to use if you take their multiple IP address option - it puts it into bridge mode.

Just run through the setup wizard and select the static multiple ips template. This puts the router into bridged mode, then you can either set your static ip in your chosen router (or if on dynamics, let it pick up automagically). Also, to get the bebox out of bridged mode, just do a hardware reset (button is on the back i think).

Went through the same process a couple of weeks back when after 14 months of problems virgin told us there was nothing else they could do to fix our erratic packet loss and network stability problems (plugging the same home network setup into the Be* and its been flawless).

Thanks, that's what I did and it's working perfectly

One question though, how do I 'log-in' to the BeBox now? (Could do with changing a few settings in it), as browsing to 192.168.1.254 on this computer doesn't work

(currently connected to Linksys Router, which is then connected by ethernet from it's WAN socket to LAN1 on BeBox)

You can't. Bridge mode makes the device transparent between your router and ISP's kit, so there's nothing really to change.

As v0dk4 posted, you need to do a button hardware reset to get out of bridge mode.

Really?

I've done a bit of searching and found http://www.beforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=8616&highlight=Multi and http://www.beforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=8467&highlight=Multi - which both say that to access the BeBox when in briged (multi-ip) you need to plug a computer directly into it (port1 I guess) and manually assign the computer an IP (as bridging has turned off DHCP on the BeBox).

Im not at home at the minute (away visiting family) but I can check this out tomorrow night for you. One thing I have noticed is that even though our bebox is bridged, it still chucks out a wireless signal. I guess its so that if you're on wireless you can still use one of the static IPs you get.

You can if configured correctly, and if you have a spare cable to patch between the LAN side of your main router and a spare LAN port on the BeBox.

The best bridging guide I've found is here. Gives me web interface access via ethport1, and the modem bridged via ethport2.

You access the web interface in bridged mode on ip 10.0.0.138.

Go to TCP/IP advanced settings in XP/vista.

Under IP addresses, select add.

add an ip in the same subnet as the speedtouch (e.g. 10.0.0.1).

Now connect to one of the Lan ports on the speedtouch and fire up http://10.0.0.138 in your browser.
