I got a Bebox which has been working fine for a few months now however my girlfriends laptop seems to struggle to connect to it.

It always says "Identifying" or "Local Only" Its just not getting its IP assigned correctly by the router. I know its setup correctly as it has connected a few times without fail but 60% of the time it just cant connect correctly.

I have also got connected:

My Laptop (Wireless)
Wii (Wireless)
Xbox 360 (Wired)
HTPC (Wired)

And now girlfriends laptop.. which is struggling. I have also tried an IP release and renew but windows just fails saying it cant renew its IP.. And now im at a bit of a loss.

Any ideas?

I have tried that.. But it stil lrefuses to work, just says connected to "unidentified network" .. Is it possible another laptop in the building is "trying" to use the same IP ? but the WPA encrytion is stopping it.. but at the same time my girlfriends laptop is getting confused as to what IP it should use etc?

Doubt it would be trying to use the same IP I didn't think DHCP would do that? Unless something has a static and there is confusion?

Have you tried updating the drivers on her laptop?

Is she running Vista?

the wifi on my bebox started playing up. but then it started randomly rebooting and all sorts of things. unlikely to be anyone malicious as a) there were only my pc's connected in the logs, and b) i use wpa2 with a 63 character psk. as a result, i have just replaced it with a netgear dg834g v3 which you can pick up for about £45. i had been meaning to replace it anyway as i didnt like not having full control over the router (templated etc) and there are security vulnerabilities with them as well. it only arrived yesterday so the proof will be in testing, but so far so good. access via the wifi (on it at the moment) is far snappier than before. i'm hoping the new router will also cure the stuttering on streaming media from my server to the htpc as well over wifi.

Good move..

My Bebox is configured but sit's in the box it came in on the shelf in my home office room. It's there for emergencies only really, as you say the wireless is poor and I find my DG834GT far superior when it comes to signal strength and range.

Also I can stream vid's off the net down stairs on my laptop with no issues at all!

Have you put the latest firmware on?

Let us know how you get on ;)

yeah i put v4.01.30 on straight away. it was only on 4.01.28 anyway, but the notes did say that the dsl driver had been updated so i thought why not. i've just tried my htpc and when browsing network shares it feels much much snappier. will need to give it a thorough testing over the weekend though because whilst on the bebox it was a bit slugish from time to time i could go a few days without it stuttering. it's looking promising though! that said, i have moved the netgear into a slightly more optimal location too, as it's much smaller than the bebox and capable of standing on its end it is nicely tucked up on the bookshelf in the hallway now instead of on the floor!

Well her drivers are pretty much latest as its only a few days old.. we bought it last weekend.

She is running Vista if that matters? But then so am i and i have no issues..

We have got it connected tonight by resetting her laptop and the router a few times but it is quote tempremental.
