beef jerky or biltong ?

tell us more!! links to kit??

you can buy a cheap dehydrator here
,i use a similar one with great results ,just buy the cheapest roughest steak you can find (dont need expensive stuff) ,i get mine from tescos (cheap frying steak @about £2.50 a go)

cut steak into strips and add whatever marinade you want ,for 2 of the above large packs of steak that usually fill the dehydrator i use.
2 tbs crushed black pepper
2/3 tbs garlic powder
2 tbs crushed corriander seed
2 tsp salt
1 tbs chilli powder
good splash (about 6 tsb) of cider vinegar
good splash worcester sauce

mix the cut strips in a bowl with the marinade and arrange in the machine (make sure you have gaps between each piece of meat) ,takes about 6/7hrs in my machine (change the shelves around a few times-top to bottom etc and turn the meat over once)

Are the results more like jerky or biltong?

I must say I am intrigued :D

Does it work with beef sausage to make droerwors?

That's a biltong receipe, for sure. If you made beef sausage with similar spices, I imagine your droewors would come out quite well. There's a place called Biltong Box or something that teaches you how to make your own biltong...err, box.

And to the OP, biltong is far superior to jerky. Well, to me it is, your mileage may vary!

:D

jerky and biltong are the same thing (dried meat) jerky is from the u.s and biltong from africa ,both come in different flavours depending on vendor ,never tried it with sausage tho i would say it wouldnt work in one of these machines as they are pretty thick.

*forgot to add, dont use pork in any recipes ,it goes rancid when dried ;)
i usually use beef tho have used venision in the past which is very nice but expensive (unless you know someone who shoots)

cheers :D

You live in London mate, there are Saffer shops all over the show.
Add me to MSN and I can point you in the right direction.
Email in trust :)

BTW: Kudu and Ostrich biltong are the best!! :D

Personally I love biltong but then again i'm from South Africa. :p

Lots of people here tell me it looks like dog food
They don't seem to like it that much here!

Theres a place on canvey island that does nice biltong !

I can remember having crocodile biltong from the crocodile park on the way to Sun City.....that was different :) white and stringy, super-tough, even for biltong and covered in a red spice....so long ago now.

But, I agree with the above, I was always partial to Kudu biltong :D

crocodile biltong ?

Whats next Monkey biltong :p

Just scrollin thru fleabay and saw this:

CRUGA Biltong & Beersticks (Droewors) **ONLY £1.85**
The Well Hung and Meaty Snack!

Thats a turn off towards the end.....perhaps I need some monkey biltong

Biltong is beautiful, but I can't stop buying the teriyaki flavoured jerky , mmmmmmm.

(Dry) biltong by a long shot, but it always tastes better over there. Pick up some droëwors too. Only downside is the immense constipation. ;P

Biltong is probably my favourite food, I get a batch every friday and it's incredibly delicious stuff. Beef Jerky just isn't the same

ok popped into a local supermarket.... as in it was actually called The Supermarket :p

Found a packet called Jack links Beef jerky (sweet and hot) 25g for £1.99
and another called Coan Biltong chilli Beef Steak for £2.20, shall I stop? lol anyway i just got 2x of each to test em out.

Cost a tenner but if I like then my wallet will come out and mass purchasing begin of Biltong or Jerky !

Only whine I suppose is the beef jerky is 25g its like 4-5 pieces of if inside the packet!
