Been 3 years since my last build, what is it like today?

Hey guys,

Had a PC built 3 years ago as per the title, with the following specs:

Lightning 7970
750W Antec PSU (I think that's what I remember it being)
MSI P67A-G45 Motherboard
8GB Standard Corsair RAM
i5 SB OCd to 4.5Ghz cooled by a Silver Arrow
1TB HDD (Samsung, before the HDD floods)
128GB SSD

Since it has been three years now, I'm looking to upgrade pretty much everything. The things before put me at a budget of around a grand, which did great even until now. However, I've been a bit out of the loop. What would it be like today if I upgraded everything into roughly the same price bracket?

Not much different, to be honest. You would probably end up with a 4670k/280X build. The 280X is just a refreshed 7970, so not much difference there. Your 2500k @4.5ghz won't fall much behind most overclocked 4670k's.

EDIT: You would actually be able to get a 290 - a step up, but still not worth a complete upgrade.

If you want an upgrade your best bet would be to get another 7970 or 280X. Maybe find a 2600k (or a 3770k if your motherboard supports it - it may just require a BIOS update) on the members market.

Alternatively you could keep your current case, storage drives, PSU, and CPU cooler and spend your money on a 4770k and a 780ti:

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 780Ti Gaming Edition 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £509.99
1 x Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £259.99
1 x Gigabyte G1.Sniper Z87 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £109.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G2400HC11CDC01) £55.99
Total : £945.56 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Why dont you keep it for another year or at least 6 months? see if something new is released

To be honest, I think you'd have to spend about 500+ really to notice real benefit. Plenty of life left in that system yet. I'd wait a while longer.

Well, I was definitely thinking of changing the cooler to one of those Corsair kits, mainly because while the Silver Arrow is pretty nice, it does cover most of my RAM slots and I was hoping to upgrade to at least 16GB, for DAW reasons.

I'm not looking to buy right away, I was just seeing what I should be looking out for in the coming months.

The only thing I would change is your RAM to 16GB and maybe a larger SSD if you need the extra space, however modern SSDs are even faster still so the Samsung 840 Series would be a good shout.
