Hi all,
Made a whoopsie, swapped my 80gb drive to a 1tb.

How can I wipe my old 80gb now it's out? I have no spare power connectors or sata connectors to plug in and I really don't want to open the pc again or spend money on an enclosure to use once... Is there like a USB to sata I can buy?

you can buy a hdd dock, the plug into a hdd and a usb port or might have a 3 pin plug, its easier/cheaper to open the pc up and connect it up again

I appreciate you said you didn't want to do it but I really think the easiest thing to do is open your case, take the power and sata connectors off your new drive and connect the old one.

Format, job done. On my system that would take less than 60 seconds (not including booting and formatting obviously), unless you've got an awfully crowded ITX job I can't imagine it would be too much more difficult.

Really not much effort at all.

If that's too much effort then let us know why or what set up you have.

Assuming you want to remove sensitive/personal data, a normal format isn't good enough - you'll need a proper secure erase app. They write/erase/rewrite different patterns many times, so can take a good while even on a small drive.

Better still, a sledgehammer makes the drive irrecoverable (does anyone still use 80gb HDDs?).

Best of all, do both (ideally in the above order).

Are you seriously saying its too much hassle to open up the case, plug the drive in, and then format? If so I think you may have the wrong hobby.
;)

I was just fishing for a way of not opening up the box again. It's not "too much effort" just wondered of there was an easier way was all.

My case is crowded and packed with cabling so it makes it awkward was all.

I'll open it up if there isn't another way.

**these drives are selling on a certain auction site for about 30-40 so worth it in the end I guess.

Well, buy a SATA dock as has been suggested... they are always useful anyway. :)
