Been asked if I can provide an invoice

I've got a small business and quite often get hand written/printed off invoices for 2nd hand stuff and if I can't get one provided I will make it myself and state that.

As for vat the seller is clearly not vat registered, there for he hasn't reclaimed the vat on the stuff so it's vat payed and there is nothing to reclaim.

There is no problem here, if you don't want to do one then dont. No scam no problem.

Agree.

'Legit' businesses do not buy items on gumtree.

Bit of a sweeping statement. Legitimate businesses buy used items all the time, using Gumtree to make the search easier isn't that crazy.

Think about needing parts to repair a discontinued item etc.

I've been asked for this several times on eBay and have simply stated I am a private seller and am unable to generate any type of VAT receipt/invoice.
You don't need to. Doesn't have to be a VAT receipt, any kind of receipt will do. The business just needs to prove where it's spent it's money.

Can't believe people getting freaked out over an invoice. Clearly not many self-employed or small business owners :p
My accountant would laugh me out his office if I tried to claim an expense without an invoice.

You're just providing proof of sale; you're not signing your soul to the devil!

On a related note, just bought a car via a bank loan. The bank wanted to see an invoice before they'd transfer me the money. The dealer refused to provide me with an invoice before I'd purchased the car. I was sure they were trying a VAT swindle or something, but was a PITA. The bank ended up accepting a pro forma, but even that was a pain for the dealer to provide. ******* Belgians
