Hey guys!

I've been away for 2-3 years but I have returned haha

Anyway, I'm going to be buying a i7 3770k setup from a friend before I build myself a new system next year, so I'm getting back Into gaming, but I need to get a GPU for the system.

I will be using a 4k LG IPS TV and will be playing lots of RTS (coh2, age of empires) as well as FPS like battlefield and assassin's creed etc, I want to buy used for this build as it's just to get back into things, what do you guys suggest I get for around £150-200?

I can get a gtx970 strix local for £85?
Want good valve for money, dont want to be spending say an extra £60 for 5fps etc

So yeh what do I do?
Cheers

4k will destroy a 970, except in quite old games (it just isn't upto it).

It's pushing your budget but I'd go for a 980Ti, even then you'll be playing at Medium settings for most stuff but at least it'll be somewhat capable :)

Unfortunately I agree with this. The budget is a tad low to push the pixels you fancy. I’m just about happy with my 1080ti at 4K.

The 980ti is probably the where it’s best at. Have a good look on the mm and see what you can nab

What about a RX 580? One for sale local for £150? Although he don't have any receipt for it

I don't mind turning the Res down as I've been playing a Xbox one for a few years so that wouldn't bother me really

The most important part is getting one with >4gb of vram, as that's the limiting factor at 4k, or even lower. I play at 4K (and sometimes 1800p) with an RX 480 8gb just fine, though in certain games you obviously have to accept 30 fps for visual fidelity as a compromise.

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/powe...ddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-18l-pc.html is a good card and at a great price right now

if you don't want to spend £210 then I would say get the 970 for a while, it's too cheap to pass up. It will do 1800p (= 4K 80% render scale) fine, but you'll have to tweak settings to minimize vram usage since it's a 3.5gb card. think of it as making your PC into an PS4 Pro rather than an Xbox one X (like with a 580 8gb).

RX580 would be good as long as you’re happy to play at 1080P rather than 4K. Better than a 970.

It's not a long term build, it's just to get back into things and untill I build a new system early next year

So my choice at the moment is a strix 970 at £85 or a rx580 at £150 hmmm

definitely a 980 Ti, get one overclocked to 1450+mhz on the core and 8ghz on the memory and you've got a screamer of a card.

it's mad at how more than 3 years since the 980 Ti launched how it is still very much relevant today. I just think the 6gb Vram and pure rendering power it has definitely helps

The 970 at £85 will do you nicely for now, it will play everything fine providing you are prepared to turn down the details a lot, even at 4k, for the price you probably wont get better.
As you say it is just a stop gap till next year, so go with what is fast enough but nice and cheap.

Nice one cheers guys, strix 970 it is, going to feel good being back with a PC, Xbox has taken its toll on me for sure!

I had MSI GTX 970 Gaming X back in 2014 tried ran latest games at 4K with maximum settings but it struggled at around 15-20fps.

My current MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X bought back in 2016 can run latest games at 4K 30fps with maximum settings. :)

I checked GTX 1070 sold price listing, the value of second hand GTX 1070 fell to £150-£200 over the last few weeks. You can get second hand GTX 1070 for £150-£200.

I remembered sold my old MSI GTX 970 Gaming X for £182 back in 2016 so guess I probably will get around £180 for my MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X.

I would recommend you to get GTX 1070 rather than GTX 970.
