Been Burgled

So just let me get this right.

Someone carefully removed a double glazing unit, came in through the window, removed just a Dell monitor and then went back out through the window, refitting it and putting new beading in afterwards?

Yeah, right.

This man speaketh the truth.

Seriously I have never heard of someone robbing a house and only taking one thing worthy of taking, when there are many things around, and then replace the beading in the window ?

check your loft/attic ;) the culprit may still be in the house;)

thieves are opportunists now matter what or how they steal.

On a slightly side note I thought all windows now used internal beading because of this kind of thing?

Indeed. However, there are two possibilities its old school:

a) It's student accommodations, landlord is making £££ and its cheap, like the budgie.

b) Never deemed an issue because of 1) It's size 2) Its inaccessibility

It can be a bit tricky to remove beading when not breaking into a house in broad daylight..

It will still need unclipping somewhere are there any screwdriver marks round the beading its only made of plastic and deforms easy with a blade or ruler.

If it was genuinely stolen the theif may have replaced the beading if he had a lookout on the basis he might think you thought he got in via another entrance and will return on your purchase of your new ubee 59inch lcd monitor in the same window.

Well I got a phone call earlier from one of my housemates that had gotten back to our uni house after a night in Birmingham to say we had been broken into, nothing terribling unusually there you might say but I arrived back at the house this evening to check what had gone missing and I had a look round to see how they got in and it looks like they removed the beading of the bathroom window removed the glazed unit climbed in then replaced the unit and the beading with my nice dell widescreen in tow.
Im not really bothered due to the fact im insured but I am impressed how they got in it also looks like they actually bought some replacement beading with them that was the exact fit of the window so they must have been round to measure up earlier.

First off sorry about your bad news 2nd off

sounds like your windows we're put in worng that beading should be in the inside

If u pop out all the beading and get some silcone put some on that on the beading and that will hold it in place as i can see them coming back as thats a nice quite and easy way in

Can I just check somethiing... you say they must have been around to measure up earier? So has the old beding been replaced with new beading, rather than simply having the old beading pushed back in again?

It would appear so as its now brown beading on a white window, Ive had the neighbourhood warden round to do a security check on the house and he did say the window was crap and he would report that back to my landlord to try and get it changed

So the burgler came around previously, whipped out his metal tape measure, measured the window then popped down to the local B&Q to buy some replacement beading before he returned and broke in.

It's not April 1st is it?

This is so much BS and I'm not saying by the OP.
If this burglary really happened the way he said it did then he should be looking at somebody he knows.
Opportunist burglars do not put windows back and they will also leave other traces that they've been in.
In the old days you could expect a turd on your carpet or even bed because the burglar would get scared and have to drop one there and then.
These days your average burglar doesn't get scared and has taken everything they want in less than 5 minutes carrying it away in bed linen etc.
You should be looking at someone you know who knew exactly what they were after.

About 15 years ago I had a music agent who lived on an estate called Colville in Stoke  (Stokies will know where I mean).
I turned up to pay my bill and their front window frame which measured about 8ft x 5ft was lying on the front lawn and they lived directly in front of a street lamp.
I thought they were having work done but apparently burglars had taken the whole of the frame out and burgled their house while they were still in bed.
They didn't put it back though.

What set the alarm off then? Surely the burgler didn't exit via the front door

PIR sensor I take it and like I said they didnt leave by the usual means i.e front or back door.
To be honest if it hadnt happend to me and someone told me all this id think the cheese had slipped well and truly from their cracker. Ive just finished tidying my room and I picked one of my speakers up off the floor that was face down and they appear to have nicked the grill off for some strange reason it is no where to be seen

So an alarm was going off and they still took the time to replace the window?

Thats the bit that completly confuses me but like i said they had no other way out as everything else had been locked from the inside, I suppose if there was at least 2 of them it wouldnt of been too hard to send one guy in to grab the stuff then get out and have the other guy banging the beading back into the window as soon as hes out

Or the alarm went off randomly (as burglar alarms often do). The landlord came round to turn it off. Obviously no one was there, so he nicked your monitor, played around with the window and left.

We can rule them out then.

But then id have expected him to clear the place out :p

you would think they would take the xbox and a few other things as well......... smells fishy to me, what have the police said? if they are half as good as these forums they would see something is a miss here!

i reckon your landlord has made a few bob, he wouldn't want to take everything, as he probably is sort of a nice guy, in a delusioned state, so he took what he knew insurance would cover.

One thing that gets me is all the easily sellable things lying around xbox, stereo, tv,video, dvd's etc along with the "finesse" of the burglary only your monitor got taken, which is by far the hardest thing to steal and climb out of a window without damaging.

I would imagine an opportunistic burglar to smash or remove the window and then flee with whatever they could carry, the fact they replaced the window the way you describe suggests intent and if they had intent why did they only take your monitor? it just seems like a cover up to me.
