So Bt has capped my download speed to half a meg :( They read a list of everything i've downloaded in the last 4 months to my dad. Little did i know that BT has a 50gb a month cap and apparantly i've done 150gb in 4 months.

Can they legally give the details of my downloads to the police or anyone? </paranoia>

You shouldn't download illigal material then. 50 x 4 is 200.

How can BT do this to you when you have 50GB spare? ....
move away from BT they suck.

How would BT manage to read off your downloaded content? Or were you downloading via IPTV on the Homehub?

Just read that fair usage policy...I'm sure they didn't traffic shape when I signed my contract a while ago

They read out a list of the content you'd downloaded?
Sounds more like you'd got busted by some of the P2P scanning things that goes around, looking for people uploading content.

Ah yes I would imagine tolien is correct, heard a fair bit about P2P scanning going on, they don’t seen too concerned about what's been down-loaded by users at the moment, more so what’s on the upload resulting in capped service or worse.

Slightly off topic but along same lines; I know BT has blocked their clients from accessing Rapidshare, both free and Premium within last week due to immense traffic (harsh on anyone with a paid subscription!), there is a work around but I’m not going to discuss that here, Google it ;)

It's more likely that your dad is capping your down speed and telling you that BT did it.

My dad works for bt and won't let me change our isp.

It's probably more to do with the staff discount than them being the number 1 ISP tbh.

Seeing as he works for BT could it not be that he's asked some one to check what's been downloaded?

Could be but i thought they couldn't reveal this due to data protection? They have also told me that if i keep downloading stuff they will cap it to even slower speeds and reduce my download limit. It's ludicrous that my dad won't switch isp's.

Sounds like dad now owes someone from a work a pint, tbh. I can't see him paying £x a month (even after staff discount) and not being bothered that your speeds have been slashed to very low levels and may be slashed even further in the near future.

If you ask me, z0mbi3 is right - someone at work is doing your dad a favour by putting it up you, that or he's just blaming them and shaping you himself ;) Otherwise why would he be happy to allow them to wreck your connection speeds like this and not say anything, all the while paying good money? Don't count on it though - I wouldn't be doing any, erm, "downloading" on that line in the near future if I were you :(

If it's your dad's broadband contract then who's data protection rights are they violating?

Seriously this just sounds more and more like your dad is indirectly puting the squeeze on you. The standard practise of ISPs is to tell you to sod off if you consistantly violate their FUP not threaten you with further ridiculous capping.

It's ludicrous that my dad won't switch isp's.

Not really. He's got a sweet deal with the staff discount. Why would he want to pay more?
