I have just been offered a 9950 for £35 is this a good deal?
Thinking of sticking it with a Asus m4a78l-m with some ddr2

If you already have the motherboard and RAM then yes.

If not, I wouldn't bother.

The main problem with the X4 9950 was its very high power consumption and very little overclocking headroom.

Because I have no experience with the chip, my advice would be based on nothing at all and wouldn't help the OP.

The chip is a bit slower at stock than a Q6600 on average. What £35 CPU commonly available can beat it stock vs stock ?
It's not an amazing chip, theres plenty better, but its worth £35 & it's performance is enough for a decent experience in a range of tasks from gaming to creative apps.

Yes, assuming you own a decent cooler, motherboard and RAM.

A mobo with SB750 would be the best for this chip.

There are the 125W and 140W versions of the X4 9950 and not all motherboards can handle the 140W version.

Let me ask you, have you got one/used a machine with one in?

I find the one in my machine that I use for development - running up to 4 virtual machines at one time, is fast enough for this job.

I have a 9950 140Watt version it's getting on, coupled it with a 5870 recently and now I'm playing crysis at 1920x1080 on top settings, and it seems good to me. Would I pay 35 quid, yes if I didn't have to change ram or motherboard otherwise there's better options out there for you.
