Been offered a Phenom 9950

Andre- first review I came across says.

The phenom X4 range is slower sometimes than AMD dual core athlon X2.

Lacklustre performance continues in games with none of the phenomX4 able to pull ahead of athlonX2.

In flight simulator the 9950 was same performance as a athlon X2 7750.

Massive power draw, reported to have killed VRM's when overclocked on seven different boards.

Despite being released several years after AMD stopped developing the athlonX2 series, and costing twice as much, they're often slower.

So to sum up they are CRAP!!

For £35 that's a great deal.
I'd go for that.

Edit: Even my 9600, once overclocked, offered better performance than the previous X2s I had.
Have people here actually used the Phenom range?

You have read one gaming review and jumped to a massive conclusion, from your current knowledge.

Athlon X2 7750
Black Edition 2700 MHz 13.5× 1.05 - 1.325 V
First release: December 2008

Phenom 9950
Black Edition 2600 MHz 13x 1.05 - 1.325 V
First Release:Nov 2007(B2 stepping)/ March 2008(B3 stepping)

The X2 is still being produced, just on newer technology!

And where does the OP ask about GAMING or OVERCLOCKING? (maybe I am being thick here)

Most GAMES of the era used, at most, two threads - mostly inefficiently

Most DATABASES quite happily use as many cores as you throw at them

Horses for courses.

For the PRICE I would definitely jump down the throat of the seller!

i upgraded to the 125w revision from a 6400+ and was quite impressed, i managed to overclock it to 3.2ghz and i could run anything i threw at it... crysis and all modern games ran fine on it. You are getting allot of processor for your money at £35, you could sell it for more than that on ebay easily.

for £35 its a great deal. you wont find anything as fast at that price brand new. just spend a little more on a better AM2+ motherboard, get that DDR2 and later down the road when the new thuban 6 core Phenom II's are released, replace the 9950 with a Phenom II X4 since their price will surely drop a bit
