Sons GPU popped at weekend. He's decided rather than just replace the 3080. He wants to build a new one. I might have a bash at repasting his GPU and maybe passing the system on to someone. It's 5 years old ish but still a decent system
I've built the last couple but it's been a few years and I'm way behind on specs. If I list what we've picked could anyone have a look to see if we've made any mistakes or wasted any budget.

Also I'm really struggling with the mobo. Don't know which to get, The b650 , x870 , b850. The e versions. If anyone could recommend which to go for. That would be great.

We've gone with.

CPU, Ryzen 7 9700x,
GPU, Gigabyte 5070Ti eagle oc
RAM, Corsair vengeance 32gb ddr5 cl30
PSU, Corsair RM850e
Storage, Samsung 990 pro 2tb PCie4 Nvme
Case. Corsair 3500x
Cooler, Corsair Nautilus or Arctic Freezer 36
Fans, 3x Corsair RS 120

Thanks in advance.

Thanks everyone. Took the advise.. He likes the case. So going for the non RGB version and swopped out the Corsair cooler and fans for the arctic 360 and a pack of 3 matching fans.
Since he's chosen the gigabyte GPU we've chosen the Gigabyte B850 Aorus elite Ice ATX mobo.
( Trying to keep everything white )
. I'm open to any advise or suggestions on PSU and Ram. The PSU looked a good price but if it's no good id rather know and swop it out. And Ram there's too many to choose. So I lazily picked white Corsair ones. There all about the £150 mark so if there's a better alternative please let me know.
Last question. ( Probably not ). Is it ok to install everything on one Nvme. Or should we get a smaller 1tb one for windows and keep the 2tb for just his games.. I'm about £200 over budget already. So can't go any more. But if I can save some on PSU / Ram to squeeze in more storage that would be good. If not we can add more later.
Thanks again.

Oh. Lastly. I've tried with the AMD cards. He's dead set on sticking with Nvidia. Don't know why. It's his just out of warranty defected founders 3080 that's made this happen.

Well you answered some of my questions.
I was going to suggest Arctic cooler and matching case fans, and the Gigabyte Aorus Elite B850 was a pretty nice build experience here recently with a 9000 series CPU. My lad did his build at the weekend in a white NZXT H6 Flow

Corsair Ram, 32gb 6000Mts, C30/36/36/76 at £150 in white was his choice, though he went non RGB.
Be aware in that case you can see the PSU through the shroud, so I would advice a white model.

He started with a 2tb NVMe for all his stuff, he will simply add another in the future for his music projects, then another for his games. 2tb seems to be a better value for GB per £1.

My basket at OcUK:

Personally I think the 9070xt is better value than the 5070ti, and at least with AMD your not paying too much for a white vs black card, but kids usually have different ideas. Your at £900 for a white Gigabyte 5070Ti eagle oc. And there is not £300 worth of difference between them. And after Christmas we will have 5070 Supers with 18gb and 5070ti with 24gb costing even more money.
£900 for a white 5070ti seem's crazy when you can litterally pick up a 5080 for £60 more. Yet no one will spend £200 more on a 5080 over a 5070ti due to how close the performance is, which is crazy considering there is even less of a difference between the 9070xt and 5070ti in so many games. I get the point if there is something that the Nvidia does for that £300, or if like my son, it's money he worked and saved for.
For me a black or grey GPU simply looks off in a white build, so it would have to be white.

Also the Gigabyte 5070Ti eagle oc. It's showing as SFF and pre order, SFF is more compact. Not sure if that is relevant as it still looks pretty big?

Lad was sitting paying Dark Souls at 4k, and the GPU fans were idle, not sure if it's due to the two BeQuiet 140mm fans in the base of the case lol.

Hi, thanks for the great reply. Through his work the white gigabyte card is £834 and he gets 15% off that so it works out about £710ish. Still more than the 9070xt . But maybe a bit easier to swallow , and he's dug his heals in that he doesn't want to swop from Nvidia. I think he sees it as to big a gamble and stick with what you know...
I didn't notice the SFF. But looking at the specs. It's seems about a normal size. It's bigger than his current 3080.

Hi everyone. Thanks for everyone's input. I'm still playing about trying to squeeze the budget.
I've made peace with choices for
CPU, GPU, Case and cooling.

Ram im ok with the Corsair , just not sure I've picked the correct speed.

PSU. I can't find another white one in price range, I'm sure it will do the job. Doesn't seem to have many ports though so hopefully it's got enough.

Storage. I've done the amature thing of picking a name I recognised at a price that suggests it's a good one.
What do people advise. Go with the 2tb Samsung. Or get a cheaper 2tb and add another 1tb.
Once I've pinned that down. It's time to click the order button.

Which drive is it specifically and how much are you paying? I'd say any high-end PCI-E 4.0 drive needs to be around £130 to make sense, though the prices are creeping upwards. Gigabyte's 7300 was one of the best priced lately.

When you get into £150+ territory, I'm starting to think "eh, well, I don't need PCI-E 5.0, but...".
I've looked at this one

Or

I'm thinking for £150isg I could maybe get a 1tb and a 2tb cheaper ones.
Or is it better to get one decent brand 2tb and add later if required

Sorry back for more advise. I'm still undecided.
What would we be missing getting b650 instead of b850. Most reviews say. Not much. I've picked these out.. are the 850 worth the extra.

Sorry for dragging this thread on. He's using his savings. he wasn't saving for a PC. Just unfortunate his broke. So I want to get it right for him. Keep him on budget but try get best he can afford.
Thannks

The main loss for B650 is that it officially doesn't have PCI-E 5.0 graphics, though some boards are being reported as working in PCI-E 5.0 mode, just not advertised with it.

You may also need to do a BIOS update if fitting a 9000 series CPU, depending how old the stock is.

Personally, I'd say that B650 boards aren't worth it anymore, unless it is a really good deal.
Brill so I've. Gone with the aorus b850. It's in the basket. Locked in. Don't know how long pre orders usually take. The only other white one was the as rock steel legend. Seems similar but the gigabyte looks a bit nicer.
I'm just putting Ram in basket and noticed there is xmp and expo . The only white ones are xmp , is that ok for AMD.
I'm not set on Corsair ones. So long as there white and the right ones. I've no idea on the numbers . Cl30 ok. ??

Appreciate your advise. Thanks in advance.

Most boards can make use of XMP or EXPO without issue, but EXPO is preferable if there's an option. Kits are being updated now to have both profiles, so what you receive might be different.

CL30 was a good balance for price/performance for a long while, but RAM prices (and stock/availability) are messed up right now. £150 is definitely on the pricey side for 32GB, but white and RGB does add to the cost.

If you were to have a look around for deals, I'd consider C36 or C40 kits too. If you're prepared to drop the RGB you can definitely get white kits much cheaper, or with higher capacity.

Hi.

I see it's pretty limited choices in white with RGB. They do have both 36 & 40 though. What do you suggest would be best. What are the advantages.

It's done. I appreciate everyone's help. Seems like some prices have gone up recently. So not great timing. But it is what it is.

Ill click order . I'm done choosing.
This is the basket. Must admit. Didn't get most of it from OC. With his work discounts it came in about £1750 so compared to some of the prebuilts, I don't think that's too bad.
Thanks for everyone's help. I appreciate it.
I'll post a pic if I manage to get it together and working.

if you still have the chance i would change this board out on the off chance you ever upgrade to an X3D cpu as asrock boards have issues frying these chips
i used to like and recommend asrock b850 boards due to their value and superior vrms for the price point but now would recommend to avoid them.
Hi. So long as it's ok with this CPU that will be fine. I struggled finding a white one in stock. I don't think he'll upgrade. I tried to future the proof the last PC then when it come to it nothing new would fit.

I wouldn't recommend buying a flawed product. But it's not my money. Thankfully it's your money and hence your problem :P
Also nowadays with amd you do have an upgrade path, unlike intel back in the day. "Past performance is no indication of future returns"

If you want white motherboards, there are options.

Hi. Yep. I thought about it after you replied and did some googling. I've got time as GPU on order so I think I'll take your advise. Thank you

Bit off topic. But what's the very cheapest way to get his old PC to display. It's a Ryzen 3700x. Don't want to play anything. Just get into windows, delete drives ect.

I might even keep it to use it as a normal pc.
Everything boots fine. Only GPU not working.

A second hand card is probably your best bet.

There are CPUs with integrated graphics that you can buy, though not sure what your current motherboard is (if it's a board for Intel or AMD, etc.). They'll likely cost a bit more than a second hand GPU though, so may not be worth it for your situation.
It's a Ryzen 3700x
Rog strix b450
16gb Ram.

It's been a decent PC for last 5 or 6 years. Shame to not get it going again. It's been running flawlessly with a 3080 till last week. If I can get it wiped. I might use it as a normal pc. Or maybe pass it on for someone to put a GPU in.
Its got a couple of Corsair 2tb mp510 Nvme in it. I could maybe use one on the new pc.
Would something like a GT 710 work. Seen them online for £10.
