Beer/Bitter/Ale/Lager/??... Please Help!

I don't think you're alone in not knowing the exact difference between beers, I wouldn't expect it to take too long for you to pick it up. :)

Its literally beer sold before it is ready. It hasn't completed the full fermentation process.

Its an ale IIRC< and is usually pretty dark.

Thats not right - mild is as fully fledged as any other beers, but the sparging process is shorter, so the gravity of the malt is less, resulting in a lighter beer.

If it was barrelled before fermentation was complete it would either still have live yeast in it, whichj would give you bad guts, or it would need to be filtered, which it isnt.

Fair enough. I didn't realise the way it is made no differed from the way it used to be made.

To get away from the bad guts they made porter with it.

In the olden days or with decent lagers that is true. Most mass-market ones are flavourings, carbonated water, sugar, ethanol and random additives like sulphites. All combining into a chemical mess which gives you a horrible hangover.

Ok let me try here.

Lager

Carling
Bud
Foster
Stella
Kronenburg(sp)
Becks
Corrona
Cobra
Singha
Holsten Pills
Tyskie
Zywiec
Okocim
Peroni
Victoria Bitter (dont let the name fool you)
Kozel
Bramha
Kirin Ichban (sp)
Zambroe(sp again)

Bitter

Johnsmiths
Boddingtons

(those will probs be the only two you sell maybe Stones aswell)

Real Ale

This is where it gets complicated as Wetherspoon pubs use a guest ale system where they bring different ones in each week.

These can range from things like Directors and Pedigree - Sign of Spring (brewed by a company called stonehenge and its green)

These can vary in colour and taste and strengths, best way to see what these are like is ask your supervisor if you can have a sip of them to see what they are like.

Wheat Beer

Some spoon pubs will sell things like Hoegarrden and Kronenburg Blanc on tap these are not esentially larger or bitters but are generally closer to the lager variety.

Guinness is the same everywhere so people will just ask you for it.

They also do a lot of different types of vodka, scotch whisky and borbouns aswell as rums and gins.

Also wines.

I will add those if you want to know about them aswell.

God i've been working at my local spoons too long.

But most should be covered by your supervisor.

Yeah I would imagine there'd be some kind of induction before you're thrown to the wolves ;)

Pff good luck :p My induction at spoons told me the codes to tell the manager there's a bomb in the building and a million and one things you're not allowed as part of the uniform.

However, you'll pick it up fast. Anyone gets a job at our wetherspoons, so short staffed the interviewer asked me 2 out of about 30 questions and didn't listen to the answers of those...was there for 9 months but left back at christmas. Still, best of luck ;)
