Yup, done it a few times, it's pretty easy, you need a lid on the BBQ though and also use briquettes instead of lumpwood charcoal as they don't burn as hot and burn slower too.
 
Works fine in a normal oven, no problem. Tend to use an IPA or some such though. Nice tasty succulant dish.
 
Had it loads of times, it's very popular in SA. You can buy something called Beer Bird, which is essentially a stand to keep the can /chicken upright during cooking process.
