Beggars, give'em money yes or no

The most annoying ones for me are on westway near acton in London. A group of eastern europeans are constantly at the traffic lights, trying to get a few quid for spraying fairy liquid on your screen and giving it a wipe. They basically do the exact same job as using your washer jets/wipers for a few seconds. The main annoyance is that they don't leave you alone, even after turning on your jets to try and get them to **** off after they've drawn a heart or some crap on your windscreen.

Most beggars I see have a dog & smoke roll ups.
1: Kill the dog & eat it, you'll have a meal or two then.
2: Stop smoking, if you can afford to smoke you don't need my money.

After all that - No Never - Go to hell

No, never after living in Belfast and hearing sectarian beggars (classic beggars being choosers there) and then hearing one giving me a lecture about how he give his childhood to some war (I assumed the austro-american war) then gibbered in ulster-scotts, was sick then huffed paint and kissed some homeless woman.

Horrible experience and I have no desire to give to people like that.

Didn't they find out one guy who was pulling in 50k a year from begging in central london, some guy followed him home and he has a 3 bed council flat and lives better than most people hes begging from. There was also a panaroma about it some people who beg they make a fair amount from it, more than average person makes in a day.

Nope.

What frustrates me is the ones that do it in touristy spots. Went to 'the dom' in cologne a few months ago and they was in the doorway. You had to physically step over them!

I don't usually give beggars money. Simply because I am fed up of seeing them get £5 then put it in their pocket and keep begging for more (Especially the 'You got 50p for the bus' types). I always see the same ones begging and not doing anything to help themselves. I remember one guy getting bought new clothes and food and a bed bits, yet the very next day he sat there in his old dirty clothes and a box still begging for money but stinking of weed.

I'd much rather give the odd guy some food / hot drink then money as atleast then I know they wont just throw it away.

The return of the squeegee merchant! :)

No, **** 'em.

If you'e going to give people money it should be because you choose to not because you've been guilt tripped in to doing so.

This, i dont give any money to any beggars at all. I give enough away through various charities and i wont be helping them pay for their booze/drugs etc.

No.

And why do they always hang around cashpoints? do they expect someone to give them a fresh crisp note?

I tend to give a few quid out when it hits the winter, especially as it got really cold last winter and couldn't have been much fun.

As a general rule I don't give to beggars. I remember the eastern European lady across the road from work used to get picked up by a bloke in a Mercedes SL every evening so the money was clearly not going to go to her.

We did used to have a bloke in our local called Big Issue John. He was homeless for years and used to sell the big issue however he eventually sorted himself out and became a social worker specialising in helping young homeless people. He used to tell some very sad stories but agreed that nowadays it is so hard to tell who is genuinely needy and who is just faking it.

Oh and I was watching this last night and though it was relevant :D

if they've got a good location and have their sales pitch down then the top beggars can probs earn that and more...

when I first came to London there was a guy with a great sales pitch going along a tube carriage, stopping at every passenger - few ladies in my carriage gave him a few quid each... by the next stop he'd moved onto the next carriage... he stank of urine, had blackened up his hands though given the sales pitch he was delivering he was clearly quite sharp... his hourly rate would have been quite high. Few years later I saw him again, same pitch, same look (smelling of urine, blackened up hands)... given the cash he was raking in there was no way at all he exists in that state - rather he likely maintains some smelly clothes and blackens up his hands for his begging sales pitches... few hours doing that on the underground and each day and he's probably earning a similar daily rate as most IT contractors

yup... a friend of a friend gave a note out while drunk in Budapest - saw a beggar asleep by a cash point - withdrew some money and placed one note in the guy's pocket for a photo... realised later that he'd given the beggar the equivalent of £60 - would love to see the guys face when he woke up to find that banknote... I mean £60 over here is bit ridiculous for a donation, over there its a bit

I do when I can but I never give to charities any more as I don't know who's getting the money.

I never give directly to beggars. I donate food/cash to the local homeless charity round here every few months instead. At least that way I know it's not going on booze and fags.

Pretty much no. I know there are people out there who are genuinly just looking for some help and would use the money wisely. But there buried amonst all the ones that would just use the cash for drink and drugs. Plus all the ones that are basically just trying to scam money out of people, without really needing it.

Anyway its not like I work in a high income job myself. I need the money I have to get by.
