Beggars

There are beggars in Cambridge but I have a friend who is a Copper and he said not one of them is "homeless".
He knows them all personally does he?

I don't believe this for an instant.

I've never found beggars to be much of a problem. It’s the clipboard carrying charity workers that do my head in. I don't mind donating to charity now and again but I don’t like being harassed two or three times in the same street for my bank details so I can donate the minimum of £5 a month some ask for.

I never give money to beggers for the exact reason you mentioned regarding drugs / spirits etc

But say I'm in town and there's a begger on the streets pestering, when I get my post-booze food I tend to buy then chips or a kebab or something. Much better than giving them money which they'll just ***** on drugs or booze. :)

I make them Fight each other for money .... well actually thats Bumfights but ill steal it as my own

I was walking down town on Saturday night (12ish) and there was child of about 7 or 8 sitting on O'Connell Bridge begging for change.. disgraceful.

I hate the whole thing with a passion, theres only ever been one person ive ever met who geniunely needed money, she was too pround to ask though so i gave it her anyway. I've got time an money for those who need it - its just your average begger doesn't need it. Birmingham is full of them.

You see them all over the place in london. Personally i just ignore them as looking at most of them they spend any money they get on drink/drugs.

I'd rather make a donation to a charity, who should in theroy do something productive with it rather than just use it to get smashed on special brew.

Even more annoying though are the numerous people you see on london streets handing out flyers and leaflets.

If you think the UK is bad for charity / beggers / fakes etc - look at the rest of europe. In Spain you get the fake Deaf/dumb people - The UK (where we give proportionately more than anyone else) - we have bred a small percentage of people who rely on donations from sympathetic people who donate before they research where the money is going. In my opinion, I have met very few beggers who genuinely deservh help.

One of the reasons I rarely give to charity.

Rant over.

Some are definitely homeless.

I was told (by the Lib Dems, so it might be propaganda) that there is a free shelter which has enough capacity to house all the homeless people in Cambridge. Many choose not to use it though for various reasons (deep mistrust in society / wont be 'one of the gang on the street' if you use it etc etc).

Beggers? I know of a guy who travels from Surrey to London to beg for money every day.

I asked him why he's begging for money etc?

His reply, "it's better begging for money than working fulltime!"

Watched one guy in Aberdeen , he had a pack of fags and a six pack of special brew under his grubby duvet . I saw the same guy later getting into a taxi !!

So no they get no money from me , no matter what the story I'm afraid

It's well known that there's beggars in Aberdeen that rake in over £200 a day on Union Street and then go home at night.

I don't give money to beggars anymore for the reasons tenchi-fan gives. You're not really helping the problem.

In some states its not uncommon for a begger to walk around the corner, take of his bad jacket put on a nice coat and hop into a nice sports car to go to the club. People dont realise that there are a good amount of money to be made from begging.

Eh  Not really helping the problem ??? By not giving them money

By giving them money, you're helping them feed their drug habit/alcohol problems and ultimately not seeking help. By all means give them food but you would be surprised how narked they'll likely be. Or in the case of some beggars helping them fund their somewhat more lavish lifestyle than they would lead you to belief.

One time a guy came upto me in Edinburgh waverly station asking for some spare change because he had "just been fired from his work for smoking the green and as a result is now homeless" whom i saw 10 minutes later in burger king buying food!! Two or so months later, same guy comes up to me with the exact same excuse looking for change even though he had completely different clean looking clothes on.. :o

Surely you'd rather he did that than go straight to the off licence?
