Had a brief look round and seems to be recommended that yamaha pacifica's 112v are good starter guitars and can be had for arouuunnd £219.

On the amp front I like the look of the Orange Crush 10watt amp which is about £40 ish which should do me as a little nice practice amp with a brilliant sound.

Anyone care to correct a guitar nub with some better recommendations or comments ? :D

I dont know about the Yamaha's... But most for around the same money you should be able to get a good Squire or Epiphone. Some of them are poo but if you shop around you can get really nice Squires.
Look into the Squire Pro-Tone range from the early 90's. It'll have to be second hand, but it'll be as good as any Fender.

Yamaha's are very good. You can't go wrong with a Pacifica for a starter guitar. In my eyes the build quality on Pacificas are among the most consistent in the business for budget guitars. Go for it.

As for an amp, look at Roland Cube's. Very good amps for the price.

For a starter guitar i would go for either a Yamaha Pacifica or a Squier Stratocaster or Telecaster above the Affinity series.

For an amp i would be looking at either a Roland Cube or Peavey Vypyr.

I would have to second the Yamaha Pacifica as well for a beginner guitar..

I have been playing for around 14 years off and on, and for the first 6 years I had a lovely Pacifica that was a dream to play!!!

As for amplification, I would recommend a small Line6 Spider, those amps have killer tone for the size.. I haven't followed Line6 gear for a while, but it was the Spider II the last time I looked.. they probably have another one out now...

I started on a Squire Telecaster Custom. I'm still using it 3 years later. I don't see the need at all to upgrade as this guitar is so good for what it is.

One day I'll have the money to invest in a Fender Strat though.

Amp wise I was using a Roland Cube until I borrowed a Vox off my mate which he still hasn't come and asked for it back.

Can't believe i havent asked earlier but what is your Budget and what Genres of music do you wish to play?

Hmm rock metaly ish?

Billy talent, offspring, green day and then heavier stuff pantera, korn, black sabbath, slipknot etc.

Hmmm £300 - £350, push at £400.

I would reccomend a Peavey Vypyr for Rock and Metal and as said before a Yamaha Pacifica or Squier Stratocaster, a humbucker would be better suited for the styles you wish to play.

Ooo really like the look of that guitar, found a few youtube type reviews of the amp that i will gander at tonight. Cheers mate, may get these ordered soon.

I have the Vypyr myself and can tell you that its great for Hard rock and Metal, i have only played these styles through single coils so i know it would be much better suited with a humbucker, i would also advise finding one at a guitar shop so you can get a feel of the neck and how well it feels.

My first guitar about 28 years ago was an old Les Paul which I still have, I find these are very versatile guitars to play on regardless of skill level.

But the best option for you is to go to your nearest guitar shop and try 7 or 8 different guitars. One will stand out as being the best, most comfortable to you.

Do other people agree with that particular guitar? I think its stunning and have held a non modified version of it and know it feels fine to me. Is the modified version worth it say over any other strat? (sticking to price ranges of course)

I was having a look into it earlier as im looking for a replacement to the pos i currently have ;) The vintage modified uses higher output, quality pickups than normal HSS Stratocasters so would make it better suited to the genres being played, i also prefer to look of it to the Pacifica.

One last point did you play the standard or afinity strat when you held it, the vintage modified should be of a higher quality than them.

Just had a look at the standard a while back that my mate had remember it just being okay so if this is better then all is good :) .
