will be following this thread. i was always considered very good at sketching at school but never really spent any time developing it. would be cool to start now

Just get a Wacom Bamboo pen and touch.
Thats what I've got it works perfectly.
Artrage is pretty good.
Just stumbled across a wacom bamboo does look really good.
Whats an artrage?
Artrage is a piece of software which is bundled with Wacom Bamboo tablets I believe.
The one I use personally is Adobe Photoshop CS5.1, I'd personally get one of the better pieces of software (if you can) like Photoshop CS or Corel Painter 12 and just educate yourself in that. Using a 'lesser' piece of software is ok, but if you want more and upgrade to something better it could be harder to adjust... Adversely this isn't the case for everyone...
www.ctrlpaint.com is a nice place to start learning
I noticed theres 2 types of photoshop cs and extended. Im guessing i just need extended.

£657thats crazy think ill have to get something else.
Jesus no, that's the type of price for Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop CS5 extended can be had for around £170 if you shop about. I luckily managed to get Master Collection (the entire Adobe suite) through my brother who got it through a university scheme.
Corel Painter can be had for around £70 academic and £200 non academic.
Autodesk Sketchbook Pro 2011 is also another decent package for around £60 (for basic sketching and airbrushing it's really good, but ***** for photo-manipulation).
