Beginner's RTS

Dune ? :O the original old skool Westwood masterpiece

Dawn of war is good + 4 expansion must be dirt cheap now (check steam)
Medal of Honour is great for its campaigns
Starcraft - classic
Supreme commander is mental compared to all of these above for "size. "
Red Alert series - i didn't like it after the 2nd... started getting meh
Dune 2000 - its very good very old - doubt many places will sell it.
Warcraft 3 - a bit like a crap version of DOW tbh... quite horrible i didn't like it
Age of Empires 1.2.3 all pretty good if you like picking berries
Cossacks! - another old school RTS with very high unit counts... quite good if you like lining up lots of soldiers then shooting them all down

Actually Company of Heroes looks ideal...WW2 would be perfect (when I said modern I meant not swords-and-sorcery kind of thing). Hopefully it'll break me in gently.
I tried Red Alert 2 back in the day and didn't really enjoy it but might have to give it another try now I'm old and more patient. Sup Com does look awesome but I'm a bit intimidated by the scale :)
Thanks for the suggestions chaps!

Company of Heroes is amazing, but please for love of baby Jesus download and play the Blitzkrieg mod.

Empire Earth
(the original was always my favourite)

Very simple and much nicer to look at than AoE :P And you can start in modern era if that's what you fancy!
