Being an illegal immigrant all too easy?

I'm probably missing something big here, but here goes.

People from other countries endure constant difficulty jamming themselves into small cargo crates in disguise, of well, cargo, to reach their desired destination to where they want to flee.
Now that's all well and good for say, criminals who are banned from using air travel.

My question is this. For normal people who want to flee, whats to stop them from catching a plane to their country of choice and just staying there and not returning?
It'd be better than being in a humid damp container box.

AFAIK most illegal immigrants do just that: they are over-stayers who do not leave when they are supposed to.

The ones who come in on containers etc. do it to avoid immigration / customs checks which would likely stop them entering the country.

Authorities would be onto them, they may not have the means to leave(passport, visa etc.) legally, air travel may be non existant or expensive.. its not just a case of getting on business class and saying "chin chin" to a glass of bolly
