I'd say "geek" was pretty neutral these days. "Nerd" carries more negative connotations I think.

If im called a Geek/Nerd by my mates I take it as a compliment. If a girl says that to me then I've said too much. I don't like girls knowing what I do or know as it's often very boring to them (they don't get the whole boys toys thing).

it entirely depends on the tone in which it's said, and the body language of the person saying it. it can be a compliment or an insult no matter the day and age.

if you've been waffling about debugging a wahoonie for twenty minutes and they say it, it's probably an insult.

if you've just fixed a problem for them with a minimum of fuss and grandstanding and they say it, it's probably a compliment etc...
