Being Fat / Getting Fat..

No as in proper weedy people. I'm not talking about toned/athletic/having got into shape.

Why do you care about other people's bodyweight so badly?

So what if they are thin. Maybe they are under the delusion that doing aerobic exercise will enable them to build a more muscular body, and you'd be surprised how many are.

I'm 6"4' and can eat anything then never really put on weight. Uni over the last few years has been a killer made it to the highs of 13 stone.

Should exercise more and drink a little less but it'll be ok, pretty much all my family have the same build really, so long as we avoid doing nothing it'll be ok.

I don't actually eat that much, at least not "on paper". My food, my calorie intake, my lifestyle and habits aren't much different to what it was at the age of 25, when I was a little over half my current weight.

Whichever way you look at it you're eating enough to maintain your current bodyweight, if you go on calorie deficit like 300 less a day you will gradually lose weight. You don't have to change your diet, simply eat less.

That's all there is to it, easier said than done I know, but it ultimately wins out over crazy diets which are impossible to stick to.

Isn't that stating the obvious?

I don't think it's true.
A metabolic rate is the energy used over the course of a day to power your bodies heart beat, breathing and body function.
It's my opinion (and one I can only base on my own experiences and a bit of research) that when people say your metabolism slows down is around the time they tend to have a huge life style change. Their mid to late 20s.

Your energy needs to run your bodily function should not differ, I can see no reason why you would become more efficient in a later age and thus need less energy (ending up with a surplus and weight gain)

For me, it's more a case of people not being energetic enough to burn the calories maybe and more likely due to a lack of exercise because of situations like bone ageing, children, muscle loss, realtionships (from lack of exercise).

Don't worry mate I can relate to this and I managed to change it. I was always the 8.5 stone guy and 90% of my meals were McDonald's, KFC, pizza, doners you name it. Family and friends kept saying your young don't worry eat it all . But nothing changed didn't even put a pound on I just looked like a skeleton. (if I show you a picture of how I used to look you would probably feel sick lol).

I was told by a relative who is a personal trainer to start working out at the gym. Amazingly weight started to just pile on ( good weight as in muscle). After two years of training I'm nearly 11 stone at 5 ft 7. That's the best advice I can give to people who just want to put on weight but find it difficult. Just hit the gym destroy your muscle tissue and all the food you eat will repair the muscle which will cause it to grow. I ended up putting a pound a week on :) good luck!

I go through periods of mad gym sessions to get my weight down, then spend 6 months undoing all the hard work.

It's stupid but I can't help myself.

Complete Tosh!

At one point I went down to 1000 calories a day just to see if my weight would improve, the result? After a month I ended up in hospital because I kept passing out!! See my post here according to the calculator you posted I should be consuming 2853 calories, if I did then I would put on 1lb a week without question! I've tried everything in the book, I'm just naturally a heavy set person.

I have also had bone density scans because my orthopedic surgeon did not believe me when I told him my weight when I was 14 years old (12st at the time and 6ft tall)

I'm 33 now and I've been 15st+ since I was 15/16yrs old, I'm not fat or obese by a long shot but I could do to loose a couple of inches from around the middle. Just a shame that no matter what I have tried I cannot seem to shift it, My father and Brother are the same (my brother is 6'4" 22St and cycles 100Miles+ a week plays football for a local team and spends 16hrs a week in the gym!!)

To quote a scientific study.
Often, overweight people believe they eat very little and still put on weight, hence the 'slow metabolism' theory, but research has shown people tend to eat more than they think.
When asked to write down everything they've consumed in a day, people tend to report eating far less than they actually do. This may be to impress the researcher or because they genuinely forget to include some items.
On the day they recorded their intake, they may even have chosen lower calorie foods than they'd normally eat.
The bottom line is you'll gain weight if you consume more calories than your body needs. This can be a difficult fact to face, but recognising the need for change is vital for successful weight loss.

Yep, I have a friend who struggles with weight issues and swears he doesn't eat much. Trouble is he is basing this on a comparison with his parents (who are morbidly obese). When he came away with me and my family for a holiday he literally ate twice as much as any of us and couldn't understand my mum's bemusement at his plates which were stacked high with food.

My food is regulated by my girlfriend who is a fitness instructor and life coach (Bsc Hons from Bath Uni) my meals are set and each food group is covered, I do not eat more than is set out for me I do not snack. Alcohol is consumed in moderation and never more than 5 or 6 pints once a month if that.

Scientific study (of witch I have been in afew) or not there is no medical reason for me to be keeping my weight as it is with the current calorie intake and exerciser routine I maintain.

Seems to me alcohol is the contributing factor in putting on weight for the majority posting in this thread - myself included. ....

Theres a range of factors. But age seems to be a big one. alcohol is probably a bigger factor when you are younger. By younger I mean under 30.

The only thing that makes people gain weight is ignorance/lack of drive to be a healthy weight

Thats a bit like saying the only thing that make people scared of flying is a fear of flying.

Fair that maybe you have high bone density, but that shouldn't effect your shape should it? Your body isn't magic so sure a regimented calorie deficit and exercise can only lead to weight loss. Otherwise your a medical miracle.

I was the same, heavy set but fat too, no matter how much I did or how little I ate my weight would stay the same. A couple of years back I tracked my intake very closely and at an average of 1300 calories a day for a month was still maintaining the flab. Then I found paleo/primal and it all changed, currently down 61kg and still slowly dropping. I've also fixed various other medical issues at the same time.

What did you expect. You were eating less than your body needs to exist. Anyone would tell you that it was a dangerous thing to do. Also its not just the calories count that's important. But the type of foods you are eating. Also if you cut that dramatically you're body is going to go into starvation mode and screw with your metabolism. It will slow down.

TBH it makes no sense that you would have all the diet/nutritional advice around you that you claim to have. Then try to survive on 1k a day.

As you say theres no point eating less food, if its still the wrong food! I've struggled with my weight, but only after my 30's before then I had no problems. But what has worked for me is making smarter more informed choices about what I eat, and how I eat. Also tracking what I eat. It has to be sustainable and be a lifestyle you can maintain. I take my eye the ball, and I slip into old habits. And the weight comes back. Like staying up late reading stuff on the web....

Medical Miracle, no. I could go into great detail about my current weight loss regime and feeding structure but its time for bed!

Back then I did not have the advice and care that I do now

I will take a look in to this thanks, It does look like one I have tried before (cutting out processed grains, dairy and so on).

There's something wrong with you if that happened, that's not normal for a healthy person. Maybe type 2 diabetes or a thyroid problem or even some sort of electrolyte problem with your kidneys.
