Being 'skint'

A lot of people don't know the meaning of skint they really don't, skint is having nothing, like to pay bills, rent etc, one guy i know said eesh i'mm skint but had 30k in the bank wtf fools.

You sound quite bitter, why do you needs material things from you family? I always get a cake, card and mum cooks for my birthday. That's it.

For Christmas i got nothing...at all, from anybody. But that's cool as i have everything i want and need because i work. And my gf, who can't afford anything gave me a xmas night i won't forget for a long while! As long as i have the love of my OH i don't care about useless stuff.

I am very bitter about this actually, but the story is far larger than my post alludes to - think along the lines of a family loan from grandparent for a mortgage deposit, yet grandparent said he wanted his money back ASAP, so forced my dad to sell his car (he had a 60mile round trip to work at that time) to repay him. When the money was finally released from the vehicle sale, he simply gave the cash to my dad's sibling who spent it on drugs. So dad was left with a huge bus journey every day to work just to facilitate awkwardness from his father and a drug's habit of his sister. Lovely family.

Me and the missis would love to go out with friends its just that with my son being autistic he can be a real handful so its very hard getting a sitter even grandperants find an excuse not to watch him for a few hours we havent been out for nearly 2 years so they may be using the skint excuse to cover a number of reasons as we use the skint excuse when really we just cant get a sitter as its easier

Surely they would have agreed the terms of the loan before any money changed hands?

Surely friends should understand due to your son having autism you need to be there for him as his parents more than anyone else?

You're doing the right thing not palming your child off to others just so you can enjoy yourself.

You certainly shouldn't need an excuse.

Obviously this thread is evidence of the fact that "friends" aren't necessarily understanding of others' personal circumstances :p

Or is it just a case of 'can't be arsed'

A meal isnt what I would call 'interesting' its just getting friends together who have not seen each other for a few months.

TBH its the least people could do if im spending ~£600 on their stag do and another ~£200 at their wedding (plus taking the days off work)

Youve always got the pushy mate tho for example you could have been working away all week and cone home on the friday. Then a mate will try and talk you in into goin on the lash even tho all you want is chill at home and wont take no for an answer so saying skint is the only way to get them to accept your staying in

Yeah I need new friends too :(

I've never been tight about going out (though I really tight about buying things - as in items, not the beers :p) I can't think of a time when I've ever used being skint as an excuse, even when I was on the dole for a couple of months. I don't see the problem in telling people how it is. If you do not want to go out you shouldn't need to say you're skint cause it sounds better. If you want to stay in and playing xbox, fine, nerd :p

Though the excuse 'being skint' is being used less and less. Things I hear more often is commitments to families/wife/girlfriend. If you have a young family, sure, you can't leave your kid on its own. However, when it comes to "I can't leave the wife/gf on her own" I'm like, *****, why not? You're not joined at the hip for Gods sakes. I'm sure she'll be ok for a few hours...this does wind me up!

All depends on the relationship some couples rarely get much alone time due to kids, work, or anything else that may take up a lot of the time I know my lady would kill me if I went work all week then spent a night on the lash and suffering the rest of the weekend suffering a hangover

I know someone who was on the dole and was so left wing he was practically falling off.

Now he has a job and works all the hours he can - 6 even 7 days a week most weeks and never takes the time to socialise anymore.

I have mates like this, to them having £100 in their account means they're "skint". In my world I'm skint when I'm a tenner from hitting my overdraft limit.
