BELKIN HD GIGABIT POWERLINE - LIMITED TIME OFFER @ JUST £67.99

At present the answer would be no I don't see a benefit from these. For me the main reason to try these was to get Blu Ray working between the server..............

OH ok no problems keep us informed if there was any conflict :) Im getting a pair of these anyway beeing a gamer so going get some results on these also for you!

regarding Blueray Ive been informed these Belkin Powerlines should be giving you a lot more than 7.5Mbs

Powerline, like wi-fi can be affected by a lot of environment factors. With wi-fi it's walls. With powerline it's surge suppression, RCDs, the consumer box, and wiring quality.

However, in a like-for-like environment it certainly seems fair to expect them to perform better, so I'll join in with the confusion.

PS - I'd also want to stream at least 10Mbps video bandwidth, and the HDX101s struggled at times (I refuse to run PC hardware without surge suppression - and unfortunately good surge suppressors treat powerline signals just like surges).

Ok, tried again last night having uninstalled the Netgear software and WinCAP which I thought might be having an effect.

Unfortunately same results as the previous tests in that the ping rates for the Belkins are definetly better and more consitent than the Netgear, but when it comes to file transfer the new Belkin HD's are slower on average by 1mb/s

Just for comparison, copying the same file between my server and gaming PC that are conected by standard cat cable through the router the transfer rate average is 70mb/s So ten times faster than the Belkin HD's

Fortune, any suggestions? Do you think that this could be a faulty set?

Note : I'm plugging the plugs straight into standard wall connections not via surge protectors or extenders. Both plug are on the same downstairs ring main. The house is old 1928, but think the house would have been rewired in the 70's.

Just one (initial question) - are your transfer speeds in megabits or megabytes?

I'm assuming megabits - in which case there's something not right even with the HDX101s.

Should the link LED be solid, if there's a good connection between the plugs? Mine is flashing, and I'm getting an intermittent connection.

Just trying it now with an extra-long ethernet cable reaching out into the hall. Unfortunately, I don't really have a choice but to plug one of the plugs into a power strip. (I could, however, replace the current surge protector with a "normal" strip.)

EDIT: Found a way around the powerstrip limitation. (Now using a 2-way cube-type adapter; I hadn't thought that would fit, but it does.)

Slightly confused at how this works..

Basically it gives you a wired network using plug sockets?

You plug your modem into the poweline and you put the powerline into any plug socket. Then you take the 2nd powerline and plug it anywhere else in the house. Then when you plug a device such as a pc into the 2nd powerline you can access teh internetz?
And if you wanted more devices networked then you can plug in a router/hub into the 2nd powerline, and then connect whatever you want to the router/hub.
And if you wanted devices from other rooms to be networked then you can buy another set and use those 2 powerlines in 2 other rooms.

Right? Or not?

And if you wanted to network a printer, do you need a router? Or will a hub do?

Yes, changed slightly for clarification.

Powerline networks are hassle free and a million times better than wi-fi in my experience.

Hi Mate,

Is it possibel for you to copy a file between 2 pc's that are connected by the powerline and see what windows is reporting as the transfer speed by clicking on more details when the file is transferring?

I'm just trying to see if other people are getting much better results than I am.

Thanks
Taff

Fortune,

Have received mail from Belkin, but still trying to track problem is with kit and not with my set up here.

No problem, I have spoke to belkin they are going to refund you the whole amount for the product and send you a new one free of charge, and give you one of there brand new Concerve products free also  though this would be good to see what tests have been done via yourself and to see if this is a fualty unit or not :) Belkin believe this maybe a faulty unit but are also looking forward to the results you find.

Quote Paul from Belkin:

"Good afternoon

I am really sorry to hear that you are having issues with one of our new products, as a way of good will we at Belkin and Overclockers would like to offer you a New Power line product to see if it was rouge unit that is not performing properly and your Money back in full, and as you have taken the time and effort to contact us we would also like to send you one of our new Belkin Wireless Conserves as way of compensation for any trouble caused."

Replacement HD plugs arrived yesterday from Belkin, hope to test them this evening to see if the first set was faulty or if there is a problem with the wiring in my house.

As a gift Belkin have also delivered a Conserve Plug block product. Which I first thought wouldn't be of use. But now having used it I think it's an excellent peice of kit.

For those who don't know this product it is a 8 plug power extender where 2 of the plugs are always on (when the wall power is on) and the other 6 can be controlled via a remote control. This for me is an excellent version to have this split set up. So my monitors (4 of them) and sound system are connected into the controllable sockets and the charger for my phone and laptop are in the always on sockets. This means at night when I'm finished with the PC I can use the remote to switch of all the monitors and speakers by remote without having to climb under the the desk and remove the plugs and leave the laptop and phone constantly charging. I'm not saying it will make a huge change to my electricty bill, but it will make me a little bit greener by not having all these items on standby 24*7.

I'd also like to take this oppurtunity to thank Fortune and Belkin for the help and support in trying to sort out this issue and hopefully tonights test will give me the results I'd hoped for.

Regards

Hi Taff, No problem with helping you thats what we are here to do... I would like to see your new results on if it was a faulty Unit or not :) Glad you liked there new product that sounds like i could even make use of it in my setup at home :)

@ supertaff

How are you getting on with these now? I got a set yesturday. I have not upgraded the fiormware yet but I am only getting about 4.2mbs transfer. I live in an ( almost new ) apartment with a single fuse ring so its not down to the wireing.

Got some cat6 leads arriving today and tonight will test these again with the cat6 and the firmware upgrade.

Would be interested to know though if you had same results with new set or if your set was naffed in which case I will be sending mine back.

Well I did some more tests on mine over weekend and I still cannot get over 4.5MB/s transfer. I have firmware upgraded, using cat6 cables and tested by putting them in plug sockets next to each other.

My honest oppinion on these is one word.. PANTS
