Hey there!

I apologise in advance for the length of the post, but I really am in a bit of bother, so I've given most of the details to make finding a (possible) solution quickly.

Recently (well, 2 months ago) my old Linksys modem w/ built in router went **** up. Basically what happened was that I was unable to connect to the internet on my computer (the computer the router was connected to) but as I had a wireless network, I was still able to use the net on my laptop wirelessly.

So today I bought a new Belkin ADSL modem with built in router. The instruction manual says that I should just plug in all of the wires, open IE, and type in '192.168.2.1' into the address bar, and the config page for the modem/router should appear. However, this is not happening and instead the standard 'the page is unavailable' is appearing.

This wouldn't have been such a huge problem yesterday, but I sold my laptop, so now I only have this computer (I'm typing this message using dial-up!!), and I can't access the router config page.

Could somebody please help shed some light on this situation please, as I really am bamboozled.

Any help would be really greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time!

I had a similar problem but was quickly resolved after installing the Ethernet drivers. I had not used for quite a some time any of the LAN's and had totally forgotten. Try this if you have not tried it already.

Good luck!

Thanks, just remembered that!!

Having trouble finding the right drivers now!

If I have no luck, I'll just order a new ethernet card

Cheers for your help :)

For some reason your ethenet connection to tthe router is probably not functioning properly,
check the hardwares present,
good drivers,
good cable
plugged into the right ports

then check that the network cards set to get automatic IP and DNS settings from your new router rather than a manual setting

ie control panel>network connections>local area conenction>properties>ip properties>set IP and DNS to automatic THEN OK and reboot PC.

Your PC should then obtain an IP from the new router probably something like 192.168.2.2

alternatively various firewall and antivirus settings can prevent access.

This is spot on, I think if you're PC is on a different subnet from the router (i.e. the first three numbers are not the same) it can't access the router. If you have fixed IP on your network card and it is on, say, 192.168.7.2 that may have been fine for the old router, but won't work now. If you set up DHCP the router will give you a 192.168.7.X address. Bob's your uncle!
