Belkin!!!! Router powering off

Yes, I know I was an idiot for buying Belkin in the first place but......

I've recently bought their wireless G router and the bleedin thing is doing my head in as it keeps powering itself off (overheating?). Powers itself off, unplug it and plug it back in, work for another 5 minutes then go through the whole procedure again ad infinitum!!!! It's driving me up the wall.

At first I thought it must be faulty so took it back to the shop and got a replacement but the replacement is just the same. Bloody thing cost me $100 in a poker comp last night by keep powering itself off at a critical time  .

Any ideas what can be causing this and what if anything I can do about it?

Or is it just a case of taking it out the back, jumping up and down on it to smash it into little pieces then shoving it in the dustbin!!!

If the latter is my only option can anybody recommend a better option for my cable (blueyonder) connection.

TIA

PS The bloody thing has powered down 3 times just whilst typing this

Try updating the firmware, pretty much all belkin routers ship with naff firmware.

I've got one and its perfectly stable since I updated.

Thanks for the advice but even that's easier said than done with Belkin !!!!!!

Their web based update facility tells me there is a firmware update, downloads it then gives an error message when updating saying it's incompatable!!

I noted the update file specified was a USA version so I downloaded the UK equivalent but even that's incompatable apparantly!

Back to square one

I was stupid to buy a Belkin router too (F5D730). It was working fine up until about 2 weeks ago. I only have 2 computer connected to it, yet it still kept dropping the Internet connection when both computers were on at the same time. I phoned up the shop i bought it from this morning and they said it can be returned, so im going to get a Linksys one instead (WRT54G). I think it was a bit more expensive, but i've heard good things about it on the net :)

if you transfer files accross your network witha belkin you are skrewed. mainly cause they overheat and die. at least thats what happened to mine. IF you can RMA it do it, otherwise unscrew the the casing to improve the cooling and make it slightly more stable.

Definitely RMA mate. Sadly most of the belkin product range is flakey beyond belief. The balance between it working and self destructing is a very fine one

Update - I've just been to take back my Belkin router to the shop i got it from. While i was waiting there, you can see behind the returns desk because it's sort of a V shape with 2 people working, and there was 3 white Belkin boxes behind there, i'm sure they were the router i was exchanging. Anyway, got me a Linksys one, the WRT54GS, seems to be very stable so far, hopefull this is the last one ill have for a while...

Finally lost patience with the pile of garbage last night after costing me more money by powering off repeatedly at the vital stages of a poker game again

Could understand the problems if I was connecting wirelessly but my PC runs with an ethernet cable directly into the unit. I only need wireless for the kids upstairs.

Anyway, back in the box and returned to the shop at 9.30am this morning. Money back in pocket and new 108Mbps D-link 624 Air plus extreme being delivered tomorrow morning.

Hopefully the D-link will be problem free

Same here, whilst I was returning mine there was a guy also returning the same unit as me. We just looked at each other, muttered 'garbage' and exited with our money back :)

My new D-Link router arrived this morning, set up in 5 minutes and it's been great all day.

What a difference to the Belkin garbage.

Thanks for the advice everybody :p

I get at least one customer a week who has bought a belkin wireless router and/or wireless usb adapter and wondered why it won't work very well.

Can't go wrong with Netgear imo. Glad you got sorted in the end :)

I've got a Belkin Router, and USB adapter for the sons computer.

Was fine untill the wife broke the USB adapter, no idea how, was just prested with a squashed mess.
It works better than a D-link router i had, which would constantly freeze up and not allow you to get on line, or into it to see what was up.

I have one of the older Belkin wireless modem / routers, and I have to say its one of the best I've used, its crashed twice in close to three years, both my own fault I might add, never needed flashing.

If I had a gripe with it, its that I a, can't telnet into it and b, the Wireless encryption is a little tricky to configure,

Using a D-link router 604, Belkin wireless access point, 1 computer with Belkin network card, 1 computer Belkin wireless USB adapter and 1 computer wired to router.

Never a had a problem yet been running sweet for 8 months :D
