Hi, I installed a new hard drive a a new copy of windows XP on my parents computer yesterday because the hard drive had died, It has a Belkin Wireless stick that connects to the wireless router, they where using this before and it worked fine until I reinstalled windows. Now whenever I try and open the software to try and connect to the network it imediately crashes?

It is a version 1 model

Any Ideas?, Thanks.

Have you got the latest version of the software from the internet?

Have you installed all XP service packs?

IIRC XP had an issue with USB sticks until SP1...

It is the only version on their website and it worked perfectly fine before, What do you mean by XP service packs?

The software now starts and says that it cant detect a wireless usb device although it is plugged in.

Thanks

XP had 3 service packs, which improve the OS among other things, so you need them to make wireless reliable in some cases. You can see which version you have by going to the properties of My Computer.

Personally I would remove the Belkin software entirely and just use the Windows wireless software (called Windows Zero configuration). 3rd Party wireless software is always dodgy and is largely pointless.

My thoughts exactly. Why bother using Belkins bloated software as it's not even needed?

agreed. the only 3rd party wireless software that was ever any good was Intel PRO/Set Wireless, which they don't even make anymore because the integrated config in Windows 7 is so good.

Ok, ive tried using the windows xp wireless control and the belkin software with it and neither can seem to detect that its plugged in.

well then your wireless adapter may be broken. Does it appear in Device manager, as a network adapter or perhaps an unknown device?

try borrowing/acquiring another.

How to see what/if Service Pack is installed

And if you need Service Pack 3, download it on another computer and transfer by CD or USB flash drive to parents computer.
