Ben-Hur (2016)

i can't believe a studio greenlit this - $100 million budget (at least), no big actors, poor director, an original (sic) thats impossible to live up to - what could possibly go wrong?!?!?!?
Someone high up needs to be sacked for this.

The theme tune is proper 80s cheese. At least there wasn't any inception-style horn beat.

Just realised the actor playing Ben Hur is the same one that played Richard Harrow in Boardwalk Empire. Shame for him to get involved in tripe like this, he was a quality actor in Boardwalk.

I'm not religious, but the ending of the original was one of the most emotional and uplifting ending scenes ever. Nothing comes close and I very much doubt this will either.

I've never seen the original. :o

It isn't even on Sky.

1959 not on netflix either (new one £2.50 less than McDo ?)
end scene on utube search "The Race Is Not Over; It Goes On -- from Ben Hur"

need to have a thread on bad remakes, listened to Kermode today and they have now remade Operation Daybreak on the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich - not the same class as Bhur but still good - the great escape next .

sometimes they get it right first time round..theres no need to tinker with things

some films don't need to rebooted or remade or re-imagined

trying to redo Lawrence of Arabia or the good the bad and the ugly..its a waste of everybodys energy.

much as this is

About to watch this in 3d... Lol 3d.... Will report back...

Not tripe, but the last 1/3rd is a bit tedious, coinciding with Morgan freeman.

If they hadn't called it Ben Hur it would have been more entertaining, but, bringing yourself up for spotlight ridicule remaking arguably one of the epicist films of that era, very dangerous.

I quite liked the set design and costumes, the chariot race was "ok" a bit visible cgi but in 3d it blurred nicely enough to look OK....
It feels a lot like Gladiator in parts, a kind of rehash... Plenty of Jesus action.... More than i was expecting... lol
