Ben Shapiro v Andrew Neil

Saw this live earlier. I generally like Shapiro but he obviously didn't bother to Google Andrew Neil before speaking to him. What works in America doesn't work here.

This is getting quite a lot of attention today.

Didn't know about this. Thanks for sharing. I don't like Ben Shapiro much. I agree with him on some things, but his schtick is to try and say enough populist right wing things to get followers and interest and then to try and turn it into favourable neocon positions such as zionism, military spending and foreign adventurism. The Right in the USA is (very broadly) divided into two groups - populist, nationalist individuals (Trump's main support base) and the Zionist / Neocon ones (more of a group within a group). Shapiro is very much the latter. So for your typical nationalist populist Right Winger in the USA, they're not in favour of more US soldiers going abroad to die in somebody else's war and are sort of isolationist. Part of their support for Trump was the idea he'd stop doing what Obama did and sending troops into Syria etc. and instead bring them home. Whereas the Neocon lot are desperate to have US troops all over the place, want to park missiles all around Russia, etc. Ben Shapiro actually said he'd prefer Hillary to win over Trump but has since played down that sort of rhetoric in order to curry favour with the populist, nationalist Right. You always find he's suspiciously quiet about certain topics on immigration or foreign invasions unless he thinks he can get away with it. Saw a nice little table someone had compiled once.

Shapiro needs to slink back off to Fox News or wherever, because if a Grade A pillock like Andrew Neil can so thoroughly rattle him to the point where he flounces off like a moody teenager being given chores to do then he's not ready for the big leagues. Poor little flake of snow ;):p

Just finished it. Despite that I disagree with Shapiro's neocon positions, he wasn't wrong that the interview was basically a series of loaded questions and gotchas. I've seen Andrew Neil do that before and I can't blame Shapiro for getting tired of it. It also wouldn't be the first time Andrew Neil has lured someone in to talk about one thing and then pulled a bait and switch to do an aggressive interview. I wouldn't be surprised to learn Shapiro was invited on to chat about his new book so he's probably justified in being annoyed if the interviewer has been going through six years of tweets and statements to find things to attack him with instead of the topic he was invited for.

IMHO he didn't get destroyed at all.

The one thing I keep thinking when watching BBC interviews like this, is that they pretty much force people by law to fund them, which wouldn't be as bad a problem if they weren't so damn biased.

When it's so loaded it quickly becomes boring. My 10yr old could have done a better job.

God this forum is so bad on mobile.

My favourite bit was him saying to AN "I'm popular and no one has ever heard of you"...I cannot imagine how his brain is wired up to think that saying that would in any way end well for him.

U wot m8?

Andrew Neil is a very much not on the left-hand side of the political spectrum.

Stumbled across this comment online; sums it up quite well :D

That was amazing. Ruffled some feathers there. :D

I've actually thought Shapiro talks some sense occasionally but for the most part, he speaks too fast and is a bit of a dick tbh. WTF is that abortion stuff about.

Shows how nuts the American right wing is when they think Andrew Neil is a lefty. :p

I'm not saying he's on the left, just a poor interview. When you are like that, it's mainly down to starting an argument for ratings. Not always, but this is the world we now live in.

Sharpiro really should have done his homework before assuming everyone at the BBC is on the left.

Neil is not the sort of person you try and outwit without coming off looking a tad stupid. Assuming someone isn't a heavy weight because he's not popular in your country is pretty stupid.

Like what, exactly? Neil questioned Shapiro on his hypocrisy and the guy crumbled and cried like the [...] he is.

Neither was great in this interview ...

The democrats have all the new ideas....?!

What ideas Neil?

Oh that's right lots of free stuff and mass central planning and power concentration (this time to avert an alleged enviromental catastrophe) ...

Yep that's original for the left....

Later on he's going on about YouTube videos posted by other and blaming Shaprio for the titles? Does Neil know how YouTube works?

Shaprio should have kept to answering the questions calmly.

I think there was a bit of an issue between how questions and politics are dealt with in the US and the UK.
