First of all, I don't know if it would be worth getting a bench and some weights if I'm going to be joining a gym. However, if I do decide to buy these, I don't know which bench is best to get. I obviously prefer the York 520 Bench and Lat Curl because it has the Lat tower, but the construction doesn't seem so good looking at the images. Also, the description states that the backrest on the Pro Power Bench and Fly can lay flat. However, I wasn't sure if the same could be done with the York 520 Bench and Lat Curl.

Any input?

Thanks in advance.

50k is not that much at all, you will probably out grow it pretty quickly.

If I were you I would concentrate on the gym rather than buying home stuff, maybe in a few month get stuff for home.

By then you will know what sort of weight you need to get.

You'll need some decent, NON vinyl weights, with a better bar are higher KG.

You also dont need all that fancy pap. Total equipment you'll need for the first 6 months:

Large Mat
Swiss Ball
Good, Simple, Sturdy, Quality Bench.
Two Dumbells
A Barbell
Good Weight Selection

You also might want to find somewhere to do chins and dips.

Ant

Thank you for the advice. I realise 50kg isn't very much, I was thinking of adding to it later. Also, what's wrong with vinyl weights and how would cast iron ones, for example, be better? And what's wrong with the bar? Sorry for the novice questions, I'm really quite new to all of this!

I'll look into getting the things you suggested WantoN, thanks.

in my youth i foolishly bought them vinyl style ones.. they are bloody awful.

When you move them, they spin.. which would be fair enough, but they work themselves loose real easily. Plus if you drop em, they can burst and crap comes out of them :)

search the local ad paper. lots of people sell weights and you should get a decent set of iron ones

Also, whats bad about the vinyl ones is the amount of mass they take up to achieve their weight. They are cumbersome.

cast ones are smaller. and easier to manouver

Yeah ive got a set similar to them, and compared to my old vinyl ones they are a lot better.

You could spend more and more, but for general household use i would say they are fine

One thing i didnt realise was you said you were joining a gym anyway. If thats the case then i think your money might be best saved.

Spend it on some gloves/wriststraps and just do all your weight lifting down the gym. then use your home for resting :)

Make a decision: train in gym or train at home.

If you are going to train in the gym then TRAIN in the GYM, then go home and forget about training, just sleeping and eating :]

Also stay away from spin lock, its bloody annoying!

He may have a point, my york spinlock bar that was with the iron weights isnt too bad , it has a rubber grip which stopped them spinning loose quite so much..

im guessing this is what annoys david.. they can spin themselves loose
