Is it possible to run benchmarks of games to see how different ingames settings affect the overall performance. I have HL Orange box and Unreal 3 but can't find anything in their install files.
Most games allow you to record a demo of the gameplay so that when you play back the demo it automatically runs through the exact thing you did when you recorded it. Kind of like a macro.
Search google on how to record the demos for different games, it will normally involve using console commands.
for me with fraps, its very good at showing fps, but when i press the button to monitor it over a set period of time then view it on excel, it shoots to 0 then back up, so the lowest fps is always 0... strange.

Not really. When loading games (or even quicksaving) your framerate may shoot to zero for a brief period of time. Just plot the graph and look for a consistent minimum.
