Benchmarks - 8800GTX to 4870

What would SLI'd GTX's get over 1 on its own??

If they are going cheap its an option i'd like to explore!

50-100% depending on the game.

Best you can compare is a few of the recent 4 series/GTX280 reviews had 9800GTX in SLI to give you some idea of likely gain.

If I had a SLI mobo still I would be tempted on SLI GTX for £80 as well.

SInce you see 8800GT in SLI keeping up with or beating a GTX280 in games, two 8800GTX in SLI should rock.

I'd flog the GTX, get a 4870 tbh, 1 card, less power and heat and not much slower than 2.

The two 8800GTX will be a lot faster than a 4870 but point taken about the need to power two 8800GTX as most people's psu won't handle it.

Hmmm, I was basing the performance increase from the 9800GX2 really, I mean thats litrallt 2x 8800GTS slapped together and the 4870 can come close to it so I was guessing maybe not much slower? Especially in Crymark07.

I think the key thing here is to sell before the new cards come out. I sold my 9800 GTX the sunday before the 4870 launch for £160. Obviously I would not get that now. Chopping and changing is the most cost effective way of keeping upto date and its also the most fun.

For the record I paid just over £180 for the 9800 GTX inc delivery.

same day I sold my 8800 gtx for £170 :)

I seem to remember a few people saying the 8800GTX maxes out with a cpu around 3.6ghz, not sure if thats right or wrong but I'm wondering how far with a CPU these ATI HD4870's will go?

The original benchmarks are nice, would love to have seen the differences at say 3.6ghz & 4ghz cpu with say an E8500.

PS: I think this thread is worthy of rating in terms of 4 or 5 stars, already rated. :)

Good move and if sold earlier enough not much of an upgrade cost either, maybe £100 max????
Indeed - sold the Ultra a couple of weeks ago for £200 so should only cost £100-£150 to upgrade to an x2. Just means I have to survive with a 7600GT in the interim :)

C64's point is valid though and I think the moment for selling GTXs and possibly Ultras has now passed. If you sold a GTX a few weeks back you could have got £150+ for it, making the upgrade to 4870 worth it, especially at current prices. Now GTXs are struggling to beat £100 which means you're looking at £70-£80 to upgrade which is a fair wedge for not much gain in performance.

I agree. 8800GTX lucky to hit £80 including postage so upgrade now £100 to a 4870 so maybe the boat has sailed for GTX owners.

I was dam glad some idiot bought my 8800GTS G92 on Sunday for £126.52.

£50 to get a 4870 seems worth it.;)

Shame rumours now say 4870x2 delayed and will not be available till end of August now.

Long time to live with your 7600GT :(

I might have to buy a cheap 8800GTX for £70 or a 8800GTS 640 for £40 as an infill if I was waiting that long.

One more thing though, after applying the 8.6 CCC + hotfix driver (after running driver sweeper and getting rid of all the old NVidia files) I now have an unknown PCI Device in device manager.

I've tried scanning through the ATI installation files for a driver match but no such luck... Is it maybe the HDMI-AUDIO driver ?

Just for anyone else with this problem it happens if you are running XP SP2, you will need to install microsoft hotfix KB888111 - The UAA HD audio driver before the system will correctly identify and install the unknown PCI device.

Dont need to do this if you have XP SP3 it's slipstreamed in.

I did this last week, got rid of my 8800gtx on the flea outlet for £150 and bought me 4870 for £30 extra.

Stuck it in and I am well happy!

FSX still isnt smooth though

Well I'll see how I go but if a LAN crops up before the x2 I'm going to be stuck.

I'm half tempted to buy a 4850 to tide me over and then sell it when the x2 arrives. Prices should have settled enough by now that I'd not lose much.

when is the 4870x2 due for release?

i have a 3870x2 but the fan keep chattering away (sounds like it will fall out) so i might hang on a bit before returning it and just upgrade to the 4870x2

You'll have to limp it to end of August now.
